Superman 1.0 CGC Unrestored 1939 (Action Comics)

Winning bid: US $15,000.00 Seller: agentsoz( 249)

Here's the description:

For sale in this auction is a Superman 1 in Unrestored CGC 1.0 condition. This comic has cream to off-white pages, and the CGC label notes "very minor amount of glue on back cover".

Superman 1 was published close to 70 years ago and is the 4th most valuable comic book of all-time according to the Overstreet price guide, with a NM- guide value of $360,000! This comic not only contains the origin of Superman, but is also the first time an entire comic book was dedicated to just one super-hero. It's success changed the face of comics from that point on.

To date, only 18 unrestored copies of this comic have ever been graded by CGC. Only 18!!! There are actually less CGCed unrestored Superman 1s out there than there are unrestored Action Comics 1s!! If you have been looking to purchase an unrestored Superman 1, here's your chance. You may not see another one for a long time!

The only two unrestored Superman 1's to sell publicly this past year were a 5.0 that sold in January '07 for $83,650! (5.0 guide value is $48,750) and this same book, which was a steal at $22,000. In the past 3 years I'm only aware of five unrestored Superman 1s that have been available for sale in any grade, and all five sold for considerably over guide.

Good luck and have fun bidding!

It was pointed out that I had this book reholdered reholdered due to small area of case damage. Because of all of the added notes, you may want to call CGC or google me to confirm that this is my book. I aslo own a 9.0 Superman Ashcan, a 6.0 AA 16, a 5.0 Batman 1, etc. They have been documented in last week's Scoop Magazine.

Thanks,

All American Comics #16 CGC 6.0 Now Highest on Census

San Francisco area collector Matt Sosnick recently acquired a non-certified copy of All-American Comics #16 which features the historic debut of Green Lantern. The comic was then sent to CGC for certification and restoration check. This copy of All-American Comics #16 is now CGC certified as the highest example graded to date. The copy was certifed as a 6.0 with off-white pages. Prior to this copy being certified the last CGC Census update noted a total of 20 copies that have been graded with the previous top unrestored copy ranking a grade of a 5.5.

"I'm happy to be able to own such a desirable book. There certainly is pride of ownership with a book of this magnitude, and it really it a great addition to my collection,” said Matt Sosnick.

“Matt is one heck of a nice guy,” said Steve Borock CGC President and Primary Grader “I am glad that he is actually doing his research on what books to buy and what prices are right, very smart way to start investing and collecting! Too many people come into our hobby with money and think I can do this with out really learning enough before buying big ticket books when they really can’t. All-American #16 has always been one of our hobby’s favorite comic books and one that has been elusive in anything mid to high grade that is not restored. Congratulations Matt!”

Superman Ashcan Sells for Record $90,000

Some of the rarest comic books in existence are ashcan editions. Many are unique, while others have only two or three known copies. Not a lot is known about ashcans, but that’s about to change as a San Francisco area collector recently paid a record price for the highest graded copy of the Superman Comics ashcan.

The copy CGC certified as a 9.0 is one of only two known to exist and was purchased by Matt Sosnick, noted San Francisco baseball agent. With partner Paul Cobbe, Sosnick represents Dontrelle Willis, Freddy Sanchez, Josh Hamilton, and 25 other Major League Baseball players. Sosnick says that he expects this to be the first of many high-end acquisitions.

"When you look at the rarity, provenance and historical importance of ashcans, you can’t help but fall in love with them,” said Sosnick. “This was my first comic purchase and, in the last month, I’ve also acquired a CGC cetified 7.5 Superman #1 and a a CGC cetified 8.5 Detective Comics #27. Ashcans are more than comic books, they’re a part of Americana. When Rochester, New York dealer Adam Perlman contacted me I couldn’t believe that the Superman ashcan was available. I expect it to be a seven figure book at some point."

Noted ashcan expert Gary Colabuono said that it was just a matter of time before ashcans started to skyrocket in price.

"Collectors interested in museum-quality collectibles are attracted to ashcans because of their importance in establishing trademarks for some of the most important titles in our nation’s popular culture,” he said. “If one considers for a moment that the first time that the Superman logo in all its glory ever appeared on a comic book was on this ashcan edition, you realize you’re holding a pop culture artifact of the highest order."
