CGC Census Analysis of the Top Twenty Golden Age Comic Books

I just published a new visualization of the CGC Census numbers for the Top Twenty Golden Age Comic Books. This is based on a snapshot of the CGC Census from April of 2025 and the Top Twenty Golden Age books are defined by the latest Overstreet Guide. Click through and play around with it. I think it's pretty interesting.

Some notes:

  • Superman #1 is a real outlier with an average grade of only 2.51. Detective Comics #31 is the only other book with an average under 3.0
  • As we know, Pep #22 is really hard. The lowest unrestored population, 21, and the fourth lowest average grade, 3.24.
  • I was surprised to see that All Star Comics #8 had the highest unrestored population, 154, beating Batman #1 by 1. Batman #1 didn't surprise me at all. All Star #8 did
  • Captain America Comics #1 had the highest average grade of 5.1. Next highest was Sensation Comics #1 at 4.78
  • Batman is really plentiful, but has the third lowest average grade.
  • With the number of high grade copies of Marvel Comics #1 and the lack of high grade copies of Detective Comics #27 I was surprised to see that Detective Comics #27 had a higher average grade from a very similar population.

Click through and let me know what you think. I'm going to look at this data on YouTube as well, so if you see anything interesting it might end up on the channel.
