ComicLink Sells Detective Comics #27 CGC 2.5 $410,000

I say: holy cow that's a crazy amount of money for a 2.5. It doesn't seem that long ago that a 2.5 was just cracking $100,000. It's going to take a minute to process this one.

Here's what they said:

Detective Comics #27 has again sold for a record price via ComicLink in the offered condition of CGC GD+ 2.5. It is the first time the historic issue in this condition has eclipsed the $400,000 mark, edging closer to the price of $569,000 realized for a higher grade 5.0 in the Spring.

The issue housing the first appearance of Batman has long stood as one of the most coveted comics in the world. Scarce on the market, chances to acquire complete unrestored examples are slim and buyers really have to jump on any example offered in order to acquire it. The sold example looks great for the condition assigned, as it has visual appeal usually associated with a much higher grade, more consistent with the appearance of a 5.5 than a 2.5. The back cover has lesser eye appeal and there is tape on the interior spine, therefore the condition of 2.5 was assigned. Preservation is outstanding for the near 80-year old issue, with near newsstand-fresh Off-White to White Pages.

Why is this comic book so important?
Insatiable Demand: Put simply, everyone wants this book! Batman is the single most popular character in the DC Universe. Far more popular than Superman, primarily because the character's humanity allows for more interesting and varied storylines, Batman has been DC's #1 hero for decades. Featured in more comic books, graphic novels and movies than any other comic book character, Batman is a household name worldwide and probably always will be.

Scarcity: Published towards the beginning of the Golden Age of comic books, no one who purchased this comic book off of the newsstand had any idea that it was going to be a collectors item. As a result, there are very few unrestored examples — only 32 that have ever been certified by CGC. Of those, the few certified in the 2.0-4.0 condition range are far less attractive than this example, and the only other 2.5 has a large coupon cut out of the back cover.
