SANDMAN No. 18 ORIGINAL COVER PAINTING – DAVE McKEAN NEIL GAIMAN
NO RESERVE.
A unique opportunity to own a piece of modern comics history.
This painting/collage was created in 1990 by DAVE McKEAN for the legendary SANDMAN series, written by NEIL GAIMAN. This piece fell into disrepair in McKean’s studio, and has since been completely renovated by the artist. The original crow skull that featured at the top left of the work fell apart, so this is a museum quality cast, in resin, from a perfect example of an American Crow skull.
The cat painting in the centre had also been damaged, so McKean took the opportunity to improve the drawing, and repaint parts of the cat, and seal it with oil varnish.
There are 3 original Sandman cover paintings in McKean’s personal touring exhibition, and apart from this image, the rest have been sold to private collectors over the last 20 years.The size of this work is 19 x 29 inches.
The media is acrylic, ink, and a collage of wood, framing, resin crow skull, transfer type, cardboard, gold acrylic paint.This work is being sold directly from Dave McKean’s Hourglass studio.
The first bid price is high to reflect the scarcity of work related to the Sandman series.
THIS AUCTION INCLUDES A NM CONDITION COPY OF SANDMAN 18 featuring this cover, signed by Dave McKean and A CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY, also signed by McKean.
At the moment it is unframed. I can arrange to have the work box-framed if you prefer. Framing is usually black stained wood.
