Want a chance to learn more about your old comic books? Are you interested in their history, significance and potential value? If that sounds like you, then send me an EMAIL, preferably with high resolution scans or photos of the comic you're interested in learning more about and depending on how interesting it is, I might write about it for the site as a featured appraisal. I'll try to answer questions for anyone that sends in any book, but, depending on the volume, I can only guarantee that I'll write properly about books featured on the site.
Some notes:
- Only books from before 1980, please. Even books from the 1970s have very little chance of making it onto the site, but there are a few that would definitely be interesting to write about so I'll leave the cut-off at 1980.
- The appraisals are entertainment/informational purposes only – no certifications or exact valuations are given or guaranteed. Since I won't have the books in hand and will be judging condition from a scan, I will only provide informational estimates of condition and therefore value. If, after that, you need an official estimate for insurance purposes or want to get a solid estimate on the book in order to sell it I can put you in touch with someone trusted in your area to do a real appraisal.
The point of this offer is really to have some fun looking at old comics and educating people about old comics. Hard and fast valuations are for another venue.
- I need a good sized image- hopefully of the front and back. Scans should be 150-300dpi @100% and photos should be dumped right out of the camera as-is. I need as much detail as possible to judge condition. It's tough enough to estimate condition without the book in hand (so tough it's only a rough estimate and never an official pronouncement of grade.) It's impossible to do it with a small scan.
Thanks

signatures generally don't improve the value of a comic. that books is very common, so it's not worth very much.

The range for SS books in the 6.5 to 8.0 range is about $250 – $500. The higher prices are for books signed by Romita/Lee together.

I have a what looks to be an excellent copy, in plastic, cardboard incert, Cert of Auth signed copy of DC Superman in Action Comics "Reign of the Superman" "689 1993/20. I have searched the web over and over for a value of this as this has been signed by ALL THREE of the writers and is listed as 77/2500. I was able to locate one that was signed by only ONE and was 250/7500 that sold for 200.00 but no place can I find one with all three. My question, where can I find this information and second what would the value be on this. Thank You, Ed
By Rob March 17, 2011 - 12:30 am
I have no idea, really. A CGC 9.8 copy of that book (About as nice as it gets) sold for $15. That's about all the data I have on a book like that.
Usually people don't go too crazy for signed books and that whole death of superman thing doesn't generate much interest right now.

What's the superman #3? Is that definitely a book from the 1970s?
Other than the remarkable luck that the Superman #3 is from the golden age, off the top of my head nothing there is particularly valuable.

By Cody April 7, 2011 - 3:42 pm
Hey, I am looking for some help. I have roughly 170 comics that were recently damaged because of a flood. My insurance company has agreed to pay me the costs of what they are worth. Is there some general rule of thumb way to figure out a fair figure for them? And I'm sorry, I know you don't deal with comics from the 80s or worse the 90s! but I really need to find some help here, even if they are only worth 5 bucks or their original price. I'd really appreciate any advice I could get from someone who knows better than I would. And some of the main names would be Spawn 1-10, Lobo, X-Men G-Force, BloodShot, Spider Man (from 90s), etc. Theres tons more kinds, but I'm just lookin for a ball park answer if I could get one….
By Rob April 7, 2011 - 3:47 pm
Most books from that era, especially the titles you listed, are actually worthless. They're better off being recycled than taking up space in a closet. A few might be worth .25 to .50. A few exceptions might be worth a few dollars apiece.
By Cody April 7, 2011 - 4:01 pm
Thank you very much, especially for a very quick response! This should hopefully save me lots of time of searching too far into something not too worth while! Thanks again!

From a book cover printer company I have several front cover comic book sheets . These sheets are around 3 feet by 4 feet. I have not measured them yet, they are in storage. The sheets have not been cut yet for covers. The covers are comics. Bram stokers Dracula. A spider man issue, and maybe the hulk or shadow hawk. I can,t remember . If you think there is value in these I will go to storage and see what I really have. Sorry the info is so bad, it,s been a long time.

I have a Comic book that was just given to me. Its called "The Amazing Spider-Man" From Marvel Comics Group in 1975. Is it worth any thing?
By Rob April 29, 2011 - 9:52 pm
it could be depending n the issue # and condition.
By Pam April 30, 2011 - 5:33 pm
Hey Rob, you seem to give some good advice to people and I have done a lot of research concerning comics but with all the info out there it's difficult to know if I have something valuable. Maybe you can help.
I have CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED # 66- THE CLOISTER AND THE HEARTH and read somewhere that it did not ever have a reprint. Is this possibly worth something? I myself (after reading about grading) would have to say it is a 8.5
Also have CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED # 52- THE HOUSE OF THE SEVEN GABLES 1st page states October 1948. Would say this is a 7. Actually have two of these.
Looking forward to your response…
Pam
By Rob May 9, 2011 - 9:47 pm
I'm not a huge classics expert, so I'll have to take a look at some other materials to figure out what you might have.
By Pam May 16, 2011 - 6:55 am
Thanks… Can't wait to hear back from you!
By Rob May 18, 2011 - 9:28 pm
Depending on the final condition, they might be worth something like $20-100 each. If the one is really an 8.5 it would be worth a bit more.

This is well outside my area of expertise. I don't really cover books from outside the United States and books from the 1920s also fall outside of my normal domain.

Hello
I have a great VF + copy of a mini comic; I believe Mighty Midget Comics from the '50's' It features The Fighting Yank.
Any ideas? Value or not?
Also, an old DC comic Dale Evans #15 with "The Oil Rustlers". IS there a market for these types of books?
Thanks much; enjoy your site!
M
By Rob May 9, 2011 - 9:44 pm
Those mini-comics are tough. I'll have to poke around a little bit to do some research.
That Dale Evans book could probably find a buyer, just because there aren't a ton of them out there.
By Marc May 1, 2011 - 8:09 pm
My bad; It's Commando Yank, not Fighting Yank
By Eric May 2, 2011 - 10:39 am
I have Werewolf by Night #32 and #33 (first Moon Knights). I would say they in the VF range easy as I have compared them to a comic I have graded in that condition. Wondering how much both these issues would be worth. Thanks.
By Rob May 9, 2011 - 9:43 pm
VF copies might be worth something like $70-100 for the pair.
By Eric May 2, 2011 - 10:47 am
I also have Amazing Spiderman #122 in rough shape. The cover is detached and there are some tape stains along the spine and a few edge tears. Otherwise complete, I know it is a key issue, just wondering if there could be any value left in it.
By Rob May 9, 2011 - 9:41 pm
There's definitely some value in it. a few dollars at least. Maybe more depending on the specific grade. maybe $5-10 or more. It guides for something like $20 in 2.0.

Hi
I happen to have a bunch of these so thought I would help. Star Trek has been making comics since late 60's. The original publisher was Gold Key and they made comics with actual images from the original show on the cover. These ones are the ones worth some money. Yours, if actually from 1980, is the Marvel series and is only worth a buck or two at best. Eight dollars if its graded and in near perfect shape. Cheers

I have an Avengers vol. 1 #1.
A spiderman vol 1 # 77
anther spiderman vol 1 # 19
a adventure #321 of 1964
With the info I just gave you, could you
Tell me if they are worth anything. ????
By Rob May 25, 2011 - 2:34 pm
That's not much to go on.
Depending on the condition, the avengers book could be worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
Spider-Man #19 could be worth tens, hundreds or, in very rare cases, thousands.
The other books are worth more in the 5-10 range in regular condition.
By Tony May 25, 2011 - 2:55 pm
All the pages are intact. But with them being so
old it's a little discolored. I now have them in sleeves.
So the Avengers is not in mint condition. Could it be worth
More then 5,000.00??
By Rob May 25, 2011 - 3:11 pm
Not likely. Condition plays a huge part and chances are not very good that your book is in anything other than average condition. If your copy is the average for a vintage comic (4.0 out of 10.0) then it might be worth something like $750-1000. For perspective on how much condition matters, a nice copy (8.0 out of 10) might be worth $7500-10,000. At the far end of the spectrum, a Near Mint copy (9.4 out of 10) recently sold for $100,000

hi tyler,
if you've got a lot of comics, why don't you send me a list of all of them and then I can tell you if any are valuable. If there are a lot I won't be able to give you values for all of them individually, but I can at least tell you if there's anything worthwhile in your collection. As a warning, most books from the 1990s are worthless.

I don't really know anything about those. I don't have any reference for books produced outside of the united states, unfortunately.

Hi My late Grandfather left us gran kids with 220 classic comics all are illustrated and their are also junior illustrated comics ranging from 1916 to 1969. Tabasco #2 1916, The Lone Ranger 1938 ED 1 #1 are just some examples. What do you think they are woth. They are in good condition.
By Rob June 10, 2011 - 8:26 am
just so I have some sense of what you have- what's the country of origin of the books?
By Jesse June 9, 2011 - 2:40 am
Hi, I have original 1942 issues 3-7 of "Classic Comics". They are in near mint / mint condition. With them is what seems to be a rare collector box that was advertised on the back of issue #7. The gift box set only included issues 3-7, so this is a complete set. Any idea on how much this collection is worth? I'm looking to possibly sell them. Thanks for any answers you may have!
By Rob June 10, 2011 - 8:25 am
they'd be tough to value. The comics themselves would have to be appraised and then there's basically a multiple applied because of the gift box (which is rare.) Send me an email @ rob.react@gmail.com an I can walk through what you have.

Hi there. I have a 1990 #1 of Spiderman silver cover edition and on 4 pages the green lizard is misprinted blue, but is green through the rest of the comic. I got it in 1990 and read somewhere that 150 were printed but they got around 100 of them back. I've kept in mint condition ever since and have started looking for a value for it but cant a record of it anywhere. Have you heard of this comic and if so how much it could be worth. Thanks.
By Rob June 21, 2011 - 10:04 pm
I'd have to research that. I don't know anything off the top of my head.
By Michael July 19, 2011 - 2:48 am
Hey there again. Just wondering if you have had any joy with finding info about this comic. Cheers in advance.
By Michael June 19, 2011 - 7:18 pm
I also have a signed #1 venom funeral pire and a signed #500 batman both with certificates. Thanks for any info you have.

I have a box of old comic books. Mostly in the early 1990's. Any idea how much they would be worth? I have some Spider Man, Star Wars, Batman and some Superman.
By Rob June 21, 2011 - 10:03 pm
maybe .25-.50 per book if you're lucky.
By Luke Sturtz June 21, 2011 - 9:52 pm
I have a number 1 X-men that I would assume is in the fine range when it comes to condition. How much would it be worth, and how much would I might be able to sell it for?
By Rob June 21, 2011 - 10:05 pm
An unrestored FINE copy would fetch $2-3000.
By Cam June 21, 2011 - 10:39 pm
I have 2 original 1963 Avenger comics, the 1st and 3rd issues. I would say they are in fine/good condition however I never opened them after I got them about 10 years ago, but its obvious that they were read/used back in their day. What kind of price do you think I am looking at? Should I get someone to look at them in person?
By Rob June 24, 2011 - 9:47 am
there's a big gap between Fine and Good. A 2.0 copy would sell for something like $3-400. A 6.0 (Fine) copy would sell for $2-3000

I'm sending you an email with a couple of unusual comics would just like to know if you know anything about them also i'm sending 2 marvel comics from the 70's that I would like to get an idea how much they're worth thanks.

I have a Batman #1 from 1940.
Its not the reprint as its the proper size. But, its coverless. It has all the other pages, just not the front, back covers. I assume someone actually cut off the covers for the back poster. I have taken it to 2 local comic shops to verify it and they agree its an original one. Its kinda funny to watch the reactions when they realize what it is. So what are coverless comics worth? Is it worth the time/ money to find a cover for it?
Thanks
By Rob July 8, 2011 - 12:18 pm
it's tough to saw with certainty but it might be worth something like $1500-2000. It would be very difficult to find a cover.
By Justin July 13, 2011 - 11:08 am

Hi Rob,
I have a few comic books that I'm trying to find out their values.
Marvel Masterworks Silver Surfer edition by Stan-Lee and John Buscema.
1st book is edition 1-5 (I know that some copies have 1-6, this one is 1-5)
2nd book is 6-18
The plastic covering is a little ripped on the corners and a tad torn in 1 place, but the actual hardcover is untouched and in near perfect condition as is the inside, only being read a couple of times.
I also have a perfect condition copy of Silver Surfer : Judgement Day issue (the one where he fights Mephisto). The issue cover is Mephisto's hand reaching out trying to grab him.
Other ones include a perfect condition Homecomming edition and 2 graphic novels The Ensalvers and Silver Surfer (thats all it says on the title, just a picture of him on his board).
Any info would be appreciated. My dad collected them, he gave them to me.
By Kaylen July 16, 2011 - 11:28 am
Actually just a brief update I took a look at the graphic novel that just had Silver Surfer on it, its the same copy as the Judgment Day comic I have its just the graphic novel reprint that Marvel made.
Full sized illustrations from page to page. It's in near perfect condition as well save for the corner's having a small wear and tear on them. When I say small I mean really small.
By Rob July 19, 2011 - 7:03 am
The masterworks book would sell for a few bucks. Perfect condition, 1st print it's probably worth more than the cover price (something like $30?) yours is worth less, but still would sell. the other things aren't going to sell for much at all.

Star Wars Tales #24B CGC Signature Series Grade 9.8 Signed by Ray Park. What is the worth now and maybe in the future? Thank you
By Rob July 20, 2011 - 5:31 am
I see two sales for that book $54 and $70. As for what it might be worth in the future, that's not really the kind of collectible i deal with.Signature series books seem to hold some value, but who knows about that one since it's not really a comic book signature. will Star Wars people be nostalgic for Ray Park in ten years?
By Tobias July 20, 2011 - 4:05 am
How many Tale of the Witchblade 1/2C Chromium Edition were made? What is the worth of it in CGC Grade 10 Gem Mint? How much can it be sold for realistically? Is it a rare comic?
By Rob July 20, 2011 - 5:28 am
i have no clue how many were made. I know next to nothing about modern collector's variants. A couple of MT 9.9 and 10 copies have sold for right around $100.

I have four comics that aren't going to be worth a lot but I would like to know their worth anyway. I have a 1989 Superman featured in Action Comics No. 645 (Whatever Maxima Wants.. Maxima Gets!), a 1990 Superman No. 43 (Loch Trevor Deadlock! Introducing the Kryptonite Man!), a 1991 (6) Superman in Action Comics No. 662 by Stern and McLeod (At Long Last… The Secret Revealed!), and an Armageddon 1991 (34) Superman in Action Comics No. 670 by Stern, McLeod, and Rodier (Metropolis Disaster Area!). I just wrote down everything i saw on the cover so it might be confusing (I don't know much about comics, I just gt into them). Thanks a lot!!!
By Rob July 25, 2011 - 3:45 pm
they're worth maybe .10 to .50 apiece.

Thank you

are the books old? From before the 1970s?
Generally, bagged, boarded and stored in comic book boxes. How are they presently stored?
By Vito July 25, 2011 - 6:41 pm
I have a Batman Year One Part One (Batman # 404) it's in mint condition. Can this be worth anything in the future? I know you said before 1980 was your cut off, but I am just a little curious.
Thanks!
By Vito July 27, 2011 - 3:23 am
I was doing a little research today on it and I have been finding it can be worth around 30 bucks. Is there a chance down the road that it might go up to a higher value?
Thanks for your help?
By Rob July 27, 2011 - 6:57 am
it's possible. Over the past few years CGC graded copies have actually been trending downward. A CGC 9.8 copy (nearly perfect) sold for $331 in 2003. This year has seen 18 CGC 9.8 sales for between $25 (the cost of grading) to $118, with most sales in the $50-60 range.
There are a lot of copies of that book. Actually there are a lot of copies of every book published in the 1980s and beyond, which is why I chose that date as a cutoff.
By Vito July 27, 2011 - 8:24 am
Is it something I should consider getting CGC graded?
By Rob July 27, 2011 - 9:16 pm
if it's really perfect, yeah, but only if it's perfect.
By Justin July 26, 2011 - 12:03 pm
I have a 12 cent captain america comic called the sleeper strikes it's from june and numbered 102 in near mint conditon. was wondering how much that would run for. and another 20 cent tom and jerry comic mint condition called gold key and there was no month or number on that one. if any info on them you have that would be appreciated thank you.
By Rob July 27, 2011 - 6:59 am
A real near mint copy of Captain America 102 would sell for $100-250. Chances are it's not in technical near mint condition and would sell for less (although it would be great if your copy was really stellar.)
By Justin July 27, 2011 - 1:29 pm
i am told that my comic has a 8.2 rating
By Rob July 27, 2011 - 9:16 pm
it's worth something like $30-40 then.

I have a Limited Collectors Edition of Secret Origins Super-Villains(c-39). The cover has small nicks and the inside pages are not yellowed and have vibrants colors. The giant 2 pg pin up of the Villains is still intact with the comic book and so is the back cover as well. How much?
By Justin July 28, 2011 - 7:23 pm
Hey again i have now an the amazing spiderman book from 1978 called spideys origin retold its done by a company called eh Les editions heritage inc. and inside is a series of comics the first one being the origin of spiderman and it says originally published by marvel in 1973. i have a picture of the cover i could send you if wanted. and this one is not mint conditon its mainly the cover the took the beating (not much of one but none the less) inside the book the pages are pretty much mint. was wondering your expertise on this if you could thanks.

Are you able to give me an idea if this comic is worth anything?
THanks
By Rob July 30, 2011 - 5:24 pm
it guides for $8 in near mine. What's the cover price? a nice copy with a .30 cover price would be worth more.
By Lee Brown July 30, 2011 - 6:35 pm
The cover says "Still 25 cents(with the symbol)"
Thanks
By Alexandra July 29, 2011 - 9:06 am
Hey Rob can you please tell me at a glance how much this comic is worth?
By Rob July 30, 2011 - 7:34 am
It sounds like it's probably in VG condition, so it would be $6 in the guide. That's a big book though, so people aren't all that keen on them. They're tough to store, so it would be tough to sell.
By Alexandra July 31, 2011 - 1:32 pm
okay thank you

I have literally thousands of Marvel and DC comics dating from the early '60s to early 70s. This includes #2 Fantastic Four, #1 Silver Surfer. The books are worn, but are intact and have no tears. Any idea on what their worth might be? I've got all the superheroes, X-men, Spiderman, Thor, Avengers, etc., not to mention DC universe of Batman, Superman, Teen Titans, Green Lantern, Metal Men, etc., etc., etc. What's the best way of getting an appraisal?
By Amarie August 4, 2011 - 10:42 am
I have the first ten first editions of He-man, not sure the dates as I am not where I can look at the moment. Just wondering if they were worth anything (Perfect condition). Also have the Superman comic of Supermar and Lois Lane's wedding, and also the death of Superman comics. All are in perfect condition. In the process of having a comic appraised: 1938 Action Superman #1 perfect condition, bought when I was thirteen from a garage sale for 2 dollars, heard it worth a lot of money, waiting to find out so I can sell.

Hi, Just watched the Capt America movie. My friend mentioned he inherited a mint condition Capt America #3 still in the pastic. Its been sitting in a safety deposit box for a loooong time. He has no idea what it's worth today. Any ideas??
By Rob August 8, 2011 - 2:06 pm
it's very rare for a comic book to come in plastic even now, so saying a Captain America #3 is "still in the plastic" doesn't mean much. Plastic bags weren't really around until that book was 25 years old, so there's a lot that could have happened to it before it was dropped into a bag.
Depending on the condition it could be worth anywhere from $1000 to $100,000.
By Clare August 8, 2011 - 1:59 pm

Nocturne didn't really make it big. .50 or something.

.50 or $1 apiece.
By Brian August 24, 2011 - 6:12 pm
I have a Ghost Rider Uncanny Orb Marvel Comics Oct 1975 I was how much it would be worth its in pretty excellent condition its sealed.
By Rob August 24, 2011 - 9:07 pm
It depends on the condition. Comic books weren't sold in bags in the 1970s (they're not sold in bags now), so it being "sealed" doesn't actually tell me anything about the condition.
By Brian August 25, 2011 - 7:24 am
Well my husband bought it in a yard sale about 1995 and as soon as he got it he vaccum sealed it. Without opening it (which I would really hate to do.) I see no tears the spine looks great the corners are not bent in anyway and the front and back cover have no discoloration what so ever. Maybe this will help with a price range. Thanks
By Rob August 26, 2011 - 6:50 am
I'd need to see a photo or scan. Bought at a yard sale in 1995 doesn't inspire confidence that it will be in great shape. the book was already 20 years old at that point so there was plenty of time for it to get damaged. A book that common needs to be perfect to be worth anything..
By Brenda August 25, 2011 - 1:00 pm
Hi Rob, I have the following comic books wondered if they had any value:
1) 13 1/2 x 10 DC Famous 1st Edition(limited collectors' golden mint series) Action Comics C-26 copyright 1974
2) 13 1/2 x 10-Dc Limited Collectors'Edition presents More Secret Origins-Super-Villains C-45 Vol 5 June-July 1976
3) 13 1/2 x 10 – DC Limited Collectors' Editions presents SUPERMAN vol 3, c-31 oct-nov 1974
4)13 1/2 x 10 – Marvel Trreasury Edition- The Spectacular Spider-Man on inside says vol 1 number 1 1974 issue under the price of $1.50 has 02930
I have more but just thought I would list these for now. Thanks so much for any clues on value if any.
By ta August 26, 2011 - 8:37 am
My mom and i have been cleaning out our garage and found some stuff of my dad's. We've established over 113 comics all together. Most are Spiderman, some superman, a billy the kid, Avengers, etc.
Was wondering mostly about the spiderman comics. I've got 66 of them all different. My dad kept this stuff wrapped tight in a bag and they are in really good shape. I mean like really, really good.
I've got a spidey super stories vol 1 no 28 nov 77…9 of the marvel team ups starring spiderman vol 1 no 66, 72,74,79,82,83,85,86,111 ranging from Feb 78-Nov 81. Ive got marvel tales(17ct), true spectacular spiderman(18ct), the amazing spiderman (22ct). I even ran across some of those annual issues.
My mom isnt up for keeping them and my brother and i definitely arent into comics. Think i can get a good price for them. We were only thinking maybe $5-$6 but we wanted to check to make sure???
Thanks.
By Rob August 27, 2011 - 7:39 am
They Marvel Team-Ups, the Spectacular Spider-Mans might be worth a couple of bucks each in perfect shape. The Marvel Tales are reprints and are probably worthless unless they're super nice. I'd need to know the numbers of the Amazing Spider-Man issue #s to know which of those would be valuable in nice shape. There might be valuable non-spider-Man books. Spider-Man books, in the 1970s and 1980s were heavily collected, so while Spider-Man is very popular there are a lot of his comic books available for collectors, especially from second tier titles like Spectacular and Marvel Team Up So…. the other titles might have some more value.

X-Men Volume 1 #34 9.0, do you know how much that comic book is worth?
By Mark Kearns August 27, 2011 - 6:16 pm
Sorry, i forgot to mention, its from the 1968 series.
By Rob August 28, 2011 - 1:38 pm
If it's CGC graded or is truly a 9.0 it'd be worth around $100-125
