Whiz Comics #2(1) CGC 6.0 cream to off-white pages

Seller: spectre52 ( 850) Final Tally: $19,000.00

Here's the description:

"Offered here is Whiz Comics #2(1), graded CGC 6.0 with cream to off-white pages, and mention of "very small amount of dried glue on cover." Featuring the origin and first appearance of Captain Marvel, this book ranks in Overstreet's top ten most valuable Golden Age comics, and is certainly one of the scarcest of them all. Out of 24 copies graded by CGC thus far, only seven are unrestored. This is the second highest graded unrestored copy, and the nicest ever to be offered in public auction. The last unrestored copy sold was a 5.5, which brought over $20,000 a year and a half ago.

Captain Marvel's importance in comic books should not be underestimated. During his heydey in the 1940's, the Big Red Cheese outsold Superman and every other superhero on the stands. Even after his demise came about after DC's settlement with Fawcett over copyright infringement, Captain Marvel continued on in the DC universe. He had his own TV series in the '70s, and his new comic title in 1973 was one of the most anticipated issues of the decade, sparking the now famous trend of hoarding #1 issues. Whiz #1 was even one of the most valuable comics for a period, beating out Detective #27 and Action #1 for the top spot in the Overstreet price guide.

Given the scarcity of this book in unrestored grade, and the infrequency of sales, it could be a long time before another close to it comes along. Next to Marvel #1 and Superman #1, this book is a steal. A very modest reserve has been set. "
