Free Comic Book Appraisals

Want a chance to learn more about your old comic books? Are you interested in their history, significance and potential value? If that sounds like you, then send me an EMAIL, preferably with high resolution scans or photos of the comic you're interested in learning more about and depending on how interesting it is, I might write about it for the site as a featured appraisal. I'll try to answer questions for anyone that sends in any book, but, depending on the volume, I can only guarantee that I'll write properly about books featured on the site.

Some notes:

  • Only books from before 1980, please. Even books from the 1970s have very little chance of making it onto the site, but there are a few that would definitely be interesting to write about so I'll leave the cut-off at 1980.
  • The appraisals are entertainment/informational purposes only – no certifications or exact valuations are given or guaranteed. Since I won't have the books in hand and will be judging condition from a scan, I will only provide informational estimates of condition and therefore value. If, after that, you need an official estimate for insurance purposes or want to get a solid estimate on the book in order to sell it I can put you in touch with someone trusted in your area to do a real appraisal.

The point of this offer is really to have some fun looking at old comics and educating people about old comics. Hard and fast valuations are for another venue.

  • I need a good sized image- hopefully of the front and back. Scans should be 150-300dpi @100% and photos should be dumped right out of the camera as-is. I need as much detail as possible to judge condition. It's tough enough to estimate condition without the book in hand (so tough it's only a rough estimate and never an official pronouncement of grade.) It's impossible to do it with a small scan.

Thanks

I have Marvel/DC comic books that range from 15 cents to One Dollar .Can I have a estimate guess on the value or what it can go for in a auction?(example:Peter Parker The Amazing Spider Man,Issue # 50, Price 35)

  6. Rob says:

hi, if you want to email me a list, I'd be happy to give you a better sense of the book's values. There are books from that range (the prices indicate around 1970 through the 1980s) that could be worth hundreds or thousands or they could all be basically worthless. It really depends on the specific titles and issue numbers + the condition of the books.

  7. Montana Gray says:

Hello, I was wondering if I could email you a list of some of my comic books and possibly recieve information of some of their values.

  8. Rob says:

    Hi Montana,

feel free to email me a list, and I can give you general values. After that, if the books warrant it and you're interested, I can put you in touch with someone who can give you a real appraisal (which requires access to the books.)

If the spine is falling apart, the book might only be worth a few dollars.

  17. Josh says:

    Hello,

I have a lot of old comics given to me by my uncle. The only thing is, they are books containing multiple comics. I have The Amazing Spider Man #1-25 I believe in about 5 books published in the late 70's early 80's, any ideas on what they would be worth?

  18. Rob says:

    Hi Josh,

Got a photo of one of the books? I'm not sure what have.

  19. Tammy says:

    Hello Rob,
I have a comic book called Tony Wong presents Drunken Fist by Jademan comics. I got this when a Grandpa Pigeon store was closing in the 80's. In fact, I bought several DC and Marvel comics as well (they came in a package called "Super Value Comics" out of print comics special purchases collectible titles packaged in the USA. Some contain one book, the others contain two).
Anything you can tell me about these?
    Thank you!
    Tammy

  20. Rob says:

hi Tammy, The Jademan book, while very cool (I read that series as well as several other Jademan books back in the day) is basically worthless as a collectible.

The value of the Marvel and DC books would depend on the title and condition. If you have a list or just want to send me a photo of the books I can help you out a little more…

  21. alex says:

i have the first issue special of Enter the lost world of the warlord and king conan dragon wings over zembabwei i was just wondering how much they would be worth

    • Rob says:

Hi, Alex. The Conan book is likely not worth more than 50 cents or a dollar if you're lucky. The Warlord book could be worth some money if it's in really nice condition.

    Hi, Rob.

I have 18 Richie Rich comics and about 26 Marvel Spiderman Comics ranging from early to late 70's.

could you give me an estiamte on how much this would be worth?

    • Rob says:

Hi Hannah, I'd need to have a list of the books, including issue numbers, and photos of them to get any sense of their worth. Certain "Spider-man" comics from the 1970s could be worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Others might be worth 25 or 50 cents. Thanks!

  25. kassi says:

    • Rob says:

julia, it really depends on the condition and the issue numbers. Off-hand I'd guess they wouldn't be worth much, but there are always surprises to be found. If you could even just take a picture of them, I could maybe give you some idea.

  29. i have a Supermans girlfriend lois lane comic book from 1969 may number 12 in ok conditon definatly not mint what would it be worth?

  31. Mike M. says:

I have The Death of Superman i believe is issue #2 or is the second copy made how much is this comic book worth ive heard that its worth alot but im not sure and it is mint condition in a plastic sleeve to keep safe

    • Rob says:

hi Mike, a regular first print of that book (Superman #75) is worth between say, $5 and $100, depending on the condition. A 2nd print would be worth considerably less.

  32. Mike M. says:

    so y is a #75 worth more then #2

  33. Rob says:

    Hi mike,

The "Death of Superman" occurs in issue #75 of the Superman comic book. So, when you ask me what the "Death of Superman" you're really asking what Superman #75 is worth.

If you have a 2nd printing of Superman #75, that's worth less than a 1st printing because people really only collect 1st printings.

  34. Mike M. says:

well its a series right or no. i mean i have the one where he is dead at the end of the comic i really dont know much about comics

  35. Rob says:

Hi Mike, is this the book you have? If so, a 1st print is potentially worth a few dollars, (it will say right on the inside from cover) a 2nd print is basically worthless.

    thanks

  36. Mike M. says:

yea thats exactly the one so its worthless then

  37. Mike M. says:

well on the inside cover it says Superman 75 Jan, 1993 Fourth Printing G-7771

  38. Rob says:

Yeah, the valuable version is the 1st printing. Sorry!

  39. Mike M. says:

hmm i have tons of comics some of them gotta be worth something. wat was ur email maybe i can take pics and give u info and u can tell me.

  40. Rob says:

Sure you can definitely email me a list or some photos. I do have to warn you that a lot of books from the 90s are basically worthless. There are some exceptions though, so definitely send me what you've got.

  41. Mike M. says:

my email is savier_420@yahoo.com i dont care if anyone sees it. but i dont see ur email so send me an email so ill have yours

  42. Rob says:

My email is linked in blue where it says "email me a list or some photos" You can just click that to email me (or you can type in rob.react@gmail.com )

  43. Mike M. says:

yea i clicked that link and it said Error 404 but ill get that list to you as soon as i can thanks for the info on the superman one

  48. mark says:

I have never before opened comics I recieved direct from Marvel nearly 20 years ago. They are still in original wrap.
    1. Issue #1 Bucky O'Hare. 1990
    2. 1st All-New Collectors item issue of Spiderman (1990)
    3. The Amazing Spider man Issue Volume 1 no. 337
    4. X-Men Classic Vol 1 No. 57
    5. Incredible Hulk #379
    6. Wolverine#62
    7. Special Triple sized 50th Anniversery Issue Captain America #383
    8. The Uncanny X-Men #229
    9. X-Factor #63

  49. mark says:

Will they ever be worth anything? 20 more years from now maybe?

    • Rob says:

they could be. Since they're "worthless" right now, people might start to recycle them, or hand them out to kids on Halloween. Slowly but surely the number of copies available will start to shrink and all of a sudden they've become more valuable.

  50. Wyatt says:

-Hello, I recently purchased a comic book to read, it was The Amazing Spider-Man #580.
-I bought it for about 3 dollars, and then i realized there was a signature from the author. The author is Howard Stern, and i didnt know how well known of an author he is.
-How much -if its worth anything- can i sell it for?
    -Thanks for your time!

  51. Wyatt says:

ok sorry rob, i said howard stern, haha
    _ Roger* Stern

    Sorry about that, thanks!

  52. kent says:

I have been trying to find a value for #75 The Death of Superman. If you could tell me the value of this comic I'd greatly appreciate it.

    • Rob says:

      Kent,

In absolutely perfect condition it might be worth 75-80. There's a "poly-bagged" edition that might be worth significantly more.

  53. tom says:

wondering what dragon lance from aug 1990 and grim jack number 3 are worth

  54. luc lvesque says:

    Good morning Rob,

May I please have your email as I would like to send you a list
of comic books that I have.
I need a qoute from someone who has good knowledge.

    Thank you

  55. Rob says:

    Hi luc,

    email me at rob.react@gmail.com

  56. Rick says:

Hi, I have Peter Parker the Spectacular Spiderman issue 1, I was wondering the worth, it is in perfect condition, in a plastic sleeve. My friend also wants me to ask about one of his. He has the first ever appearance of The Punisher (i don't remember the actual name of the book, just that it's his first appearance) it is also in perfect condition in a sleeve, and he also has a perfect condition first appearance of the black suit in spiderman.

    • Rob says:

      Hi Rick,

In truly perfect shape the Spectacular Spider-Man book would be worth about $250. Chances are your book is not in that highest, highest grade so it's probably worth significantly less. People bought and saved boxes of that book, so it's very common.

The first appearance of the Punisher was in Amazing Spider-Man #129. In perfect shape, it's worth $7-10000. Again, chances are his book is not in that kind of shape and would therefore be worth anywhere between $150 and maybe $750

The first black costume appearance in Amazing Spider-Man #252 would be worth anywhere between $5-250 depending on the condition.

If you have scans or high res photos of any of the books I can give you a better idea of the value.

  57. Rick says:

thanks, i'll try to get scans, but i know that the books were bought new from his dad, never been read, and were put in the plastic right after bought. same with my spiderman, he had 2 copies and gave me one of them. thank you for the info.

    • Rob says:

      Hi Rick,

It's tough to describe without examples in hand, but the difference between the very best books and lesser copies are very difficult for most folks to see.

  58. Sage says:

i have a freddy vs jason vs ash #2 signed by Eric powell, punisher 2099 #1 holographic, the man called nova #25 (from the 70's) and the hulk #377. im wondering how much these are worth cause i think they may be my most valuable and lol i got the nova one from my library for 25 cents

  59. Rob says:

    Hi Sage,

I don't know anything about the Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash book. The other three are probably worth .50-1

  60. Tammi Nowlin says:

Hello, Rob. I have one DC comice book that i would like to learn more about the value – The Brand New Adventures of Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer. The cover lists 1958 – 59 Issue. Published by National Comics Publications, Inc. Information that you might provide will be greatly appreciated. I will try to scan a copy to provide to you tomorrow. Thank you!

  61. jessica ryan says:

i have 40 issues of a comic called ALF. i also have MAD comic books. i really want to know how much they are worth.

    thank you rob

    • Rob says:

Some of the Alf's guide for $3-4 each, which generally indicates someone is actually buying them. I have no idea of their true value however. What years are the Mads from?

  62. corey says:

feb. 1957 cbs television prensetns the adventures of mighty mouse, good condition…?????????????

  63. ronnie says:

hello i have the complete series of the warlord starting 1975 in very fine condition on all books and all annual specials as well and the first issue is signed by mike grell. i was wondering if you can give me a rough estimate of the value of the entire collection? all books have been sleeved since purchase.

  64. Mike Hamilton says:

    Hey Rob,

Bought a lot of Star Wars comic books, mint condition from Comic Books stores (marvel). Surprised to see that they aren't worth much. Used to be able to find comic books everywhere, not so much anymore. Why the fall out?

    • Rob says:

Hi Mike. You're kind of asking two questions. Comic pamphlets have mostly moved into specialty stores and the combination of Manga digests and Graphic Novel format comics now dominate bookstores, so the comic market has really just changed over the past 30 years.

The star wars books aren't that valuable because they were very popular and were released in an era where everything that was bought was saved. So there are many thousands of nice copies of all the early issues.

      • Mike Hamilton says:

Thanks for the response, its appreciated. I've seen the first edition #1 issue Star Wars comic going for 3k….mine is also very good condition, bagged from the time I got it stored in a box, all the pages are there and white. New at this, how to get an appraisal? I'm sure mine's not worth 3k….but just curious how much, the wife needs a minivan! ahahha

        • Rob says:

The copy that went for $3000 was a 35 cent variant. That's a rare version. Chances are very good you don't have that version (which isn't to say your copy might not have a 35 cent price tag- it might. There are many 35 cent reprints. Those are worthless. ) If you have a regular, 30 cent first print in nearly perfect condition, professionally graded by the folks at CGC, then it might be worth $500.

If you have a high resolution photo or a scan, I can give you some sense of what it might be worth.

          • Mike Hamilton says:

Thanks for helpin me understand Rob, its appreciated. Why the different symbols on the prices….some have a diamond, and some are squared off? I hope that makes sense, and I'll take a photo of the one I have.

  65. john sarmiento says:

hi Rob i would like to know the price of a have a superman pal,Jimmy olsen year 1965 issue 13, thank you

    • Rob says:

Depending on the condition it could be worth anywhere from maybe $5 to a few hundred dollars. Likelier in the lower end of that range.

  66. Tilo says:

Is The All New X-men #10 worth anything? It is part of Marvels 25th Anniversary.

  67. Rob says:

Not worth much at all. There were many of them printed and many thousands of them were stored away.

  68. Jillian says:

I have a Spiderman 25th Aniversery edition still in the plastic, never been opened. I got it when I was 2 or 3 so im guessing its about 20 years old. I was just wonding if you could let me know how much it is worth because im looking to sell it. Thanks

  69. Jay says:

    Hey Rob,
I have Amazing Spiderman #121, and #122. Original prints. Their in plastic intact with no major tears. Maybe a crease or two from before my time, but they have been wrapped in plastic and stored for the last 16 years. I was just wondering their worth….Thanks

  70. diran says:

    Thanks,

    Diran

  71. How much would The Amazing Spider Man comic #53 be worth? If it's worth anything decent I will gladly email you pics of the condition. It's yellowing a bit, all the pages are in tact, and there an itty bitty super tiny tear on the back cover.

  76. Tif says:

HI Rob again Im wondering about a comic called Lord Jim, 1957 #136. Also Spider man Horns of the rhino? We cant remember the edition we have. Thanks!!

  77. Rob says:

    Hi,

The Lord Jim comic is Classics Illustrated #136. Classics Illustrated comics don't sell very well, so it's maybe worth .50 or $1.

  78. Tif says:

WHT ABOUT THE SPIDER MAN HORNS OF THE RHINO???

  79. Sandra says:

I have a few comics that I'd like to see if they have value. I couldn't get your link to coperate. If you let me know where to send my list with pics I would be happy to know your opinion. Thanks, Sandra

  80. shawn says:

hi i was wondering how much an issue 4 conan the barbarian(1975) is worth in great condition

  81. Aliza Mesbahi says:

Hi. I have many Enter the Lost World of the Warlord from October 1981 number 50 through February 1987 number 114 with several missing. I also have the annual editions for 1983, 84, and 85. They have not been specially cared for, but they are in good condition (no tears or dirt). Any value here?
    Thanks.

    • Rob says:

if you sold the entire lot together, you might be able to make some money- $25-50 or more. Individually, I don't think there's anything of value.

  82. joel says:

    Thankyou, Rick

  86. Mike says:

I have a copy of Hulk #181 first appearance of Wolverine in "fair" condition. Worth much?

  87. Amy says:

My roommate inhearted her mom's comic books of called Classics Illustrated she has diffrent numbers and we are not seeing any info in the books to tell anything about em wondering if you can help us tell anything about them i keep seeing like 1st ed or hlm or something but we are not seeing that in the books

    • Rob says:

Classics Illustrated are very confusing except for people who collect them and aren't very valuable except in very specific circumstances

      • Dan Cusimano says:

There's actually a very easy way to determine the value of Classics. Classics were reprinted a zillion times, and in the vast majority of cases, only the first printing has any real value.

On the back cover (or the inside front cover) there is a re-order form. You'll see a list of issue numbers. If the "Highest Reorder Number" (HRN) is the same (or one higher) than the comic you have, that's a first printing (for example, if you have a copy of Classics Illustrated 90, and the HRN is also 90, that's an original), and has some value.

In some early issues, the second printing also has some value, but those are the exceptions. There were three issues that were NOT reprinted at all, and only have one edition, issues 53, 70, and 73. Those are worth significant sums as there's a strong demand for them. Hope this helps.

  88. Richard Buzgierski says:

I have a Mighty Mouse , Thre Dimension , Oct. 1953 ,w/ space goggles ,vol. 1 no.1 in good cond.

  89. Dave V says:

thanks Rob for the adventure. D

  90. Glynn Adkins says:

    Hello Rob

I just wanted to know what was the total print run for the
    DC Comic's Superman 75 poly=bagged
( Or better know as the black with the bleeding " S " )

I ask because as of today I just got back my cover from cgc and it was graded 9.8 only 35 copy's that high so now, I wanted to find out the print run amount ….Do you know that imformation or could you point me in the right path to find out ???
    Thanks
    Glynn

    • Rob says:

      Hi Glynn,

I really have no idea. That's not the kind of book I follow all that closely.

      Thanks!

      • Dan Cusimano says:

The print run on that book was EXCEPTIONALLY high, maybe two million or higher, plus it has seen significant reprinting. GPA is showing the 9.8 price cratering.

  91. Justin says:

Hey, I have a large collection of comics I would like to get appraised. Titles include Green Lantern, Superman, Blue Beetle, Captain America (including The Bloodstone Hunt arc, 357-364). I live in Virginia, near Roanoke, any way you could help me find someone who could help me out fairly close by?

  92. George says:

Hi I have a 1966 Spider- man golden record #1 reprint still sealed in the shrink with the record, it has never been opened, I found one on ebay that was graded high for 3200 but this has never had a hand on it in 44years. Its mint cause its still sealed, what would you say its worth, if not sure please give Me a ball park figure. Thanks So Much George

    • Rob says:

Depending on exactly how nice it is it could be worth anywhere between $500 and $2500 for just the comic. I don't really know anything about them if they're still sealed in terms of value.

  93. George says:

Rob if I am correct I believe there were only four of these released in 1966 Avengers, Fantastic Four, Thor, and Spiderman, I have three out of the four all new and still sealed never been opened I do have the fourth one but it has been opened. I do not know alot about comics but I am pretty sure I should not have them opened to be graded correct? As they all sit now they are flawless. Thanks again George

    • Rob says:

I would have to ask around to see what they're worth, sealed. Yes, to get them graded by CGC you'd have to send them down to Florida unsealed.

the one copy of the Spider-Man book I know of (and it's not something I follow at all) sold for around $1000. I'll email you for some more info.

  94. George says:

Thanks Rob!! I called a local shop and they want me to bring it in, not sure yet if Im willing to do so. Thanks again!!! George

  95. George says:

    Rob
Just curious what you think that Avengers one will go for unsealed and ungraded? Just a shot in the dark estimate.

    Thanks George

  96. Don Melvin says:

Dear Rob, I'm holding a bunch of marvel comics, mostly in the siver age group. They are all in good condition. I can send pictures and a list. Their is a convention( Comic ) coming to town next month and I'm looking for the safest way to sell them and get their maximum value, what do you advise.

  97. Rachael says:

Hello! Was wondering how much mint X-Files comics are worth. I have all issues and rare. Mainly what are -2,-1, 0, and 1 value. All in 9.9 condition. Thanks

    • Rob says:

CGC graded copies, were they really 9.9 might be worth a $1-200. They're probably not 9.9 though, so your books are probably not worth getting graded. 9.4s and 9.6s sell for just over the cost of grading or below $10-40. Raw, I would imagine they might bring a couple of dollars each

  98. Clinton Vratil says:

I have a lot of older comics! I am scanning them so I can send the pictures to you . But I will need you email account number.

  99. Clinton Vratil says:

Rob I tried to send you pictures of some of my comics but the file was to big to send to you.

  100. Clinton Vratil says:

I am sorry I am Computer illiterate and do not know what to do when going to a site like that.
I will try to get all my books scanned and put on a disc. Then I will ask where to send it.
    Thanks Clinton

    • Rob says:

Before you go to any trouble like that, why don't you just email me a list of what you have. That way I can save you time if the books are not that valuable.

  101. Clinton Vratil says:

Rob this is just a few that I have. If you want I can send them to your email address.

The fallen son book it worth maybe $5-10 as well.

  105. Ray Boutin says:

I have approximaty 1,200 comic books. Many from 50's and 60's
I am curious of the value of one in particular. Superman No. 1 (reprint 1966) what would this book be worth.

Also, I have Classics Illustrated from No. 1 Three musketeers up to no. 169 with a few missing in between.

    • Rob says:

      Hey Ray,

If you have a list, I can take a look and let you know what might be of interest. I can tell you there are many, many, many, many more books than that Superman #1 reprint from that would be of interest to collectors. Failing a list, where are you located? I might be able to put you in touch with someone I know who could look at the books in person.

      Rob

  112. Steve says:

I have the entire original Rip Hunter Time Master series, The original Silver Surfer series from the 60's, and the first appearance of Silver Surfer/Fantastic four #48.I also have the DC Green Lantern comic in excellent condition. Most books are in excellent condition. I'd like to have them graded, but am afraid to mail them out. Do you have suggestions, or a value estimate? I started collecting in the early 80's with my dad, and we have thousands and thousands of comics, that are just as cool as the above. I'm trying to get a ballpark of value, or some advice.

    • Rob says:

The value could be significant (thousands), or not-so-significant (hundreds) depending on the condition. If you want to send me some photos I can give you a sense of where they land on that scale.

  113. Dempsey Wilson says:

Howdy! I just bought a special edition The Spectacular Spiderman deluxe edition, Spidey's greatest foes. The back is damaged a bit, but otherwise it's in great shape. What's it worth?

THank you, Larry Hawkghost.

    • Rob says:

      Hi Larry,

If it's what I think it is, it's probably worth a couple of bucks. I'd have to see the actual book to really know its value.

      • I have the Classic Illustrated comics ….1970 issue….numbers to 164……..missing about 40 books in between the 164…….It is in fairly good condition, considering that is the 1970 issue…the spines are all good…front and back covers good….what do you think the market value is

  115. Nakia says:

    Hi Rob,

We were cleaning out my boyfriends closet and found alot of first print comics all in amazing condtion, all from from '86 and '87. We also found alot of Conan the barbarian, New mutants, GROO, Conan the king, X factor, Dare devil, and THOR. All are close to perfect. Just wondering how much they would be worth, and the best way to sell them.

    Thanks!

    • Nakia says:

      Oh, and lot's of x-men too. :)

    • Rob says:

      Hi Nakia,

If you had a list I could maybe point out a few that were valuable. For the most part books from the 1980s were hoarded in great quantities so, with some exceptions, most of them are only worth .50 to $1 retail.

      • Nakia says:

        The new mutants 51-60
        giant sized xmen 11×2
        classic xmen 11
xmen over 50 of them, still have to go through them. all 100's -200's
        GROO 25-34
        conan the king 22-45
        daredevil 242, 244, 249
        Thor 378-386
        conan the king 36-45

This is a wonderful service you do…Thanksx10.

        • Rob says:

          Hi nakia,

Some of the x-men in the 100s might be worth a few dollars, depending on how low the numbers are. The rest aren't really worth much at all.

  116. Branden says:

    • Rob says:

Hi antonio, what numbers? There are some Superman comic books worth tens of thousands of dollars and others worth .50 if you're lucky enough to find a buyer.

  128. Rich says:

Two quick questions sir. I've noticed the term "variant cover" while scanning websites to determine a value for my collection. Question #1. I was itemizing my collection and noticed 3 issues of the Amazing Spider-Man, 186, 187, and 188, that are slightly different. They are in M-NM condition. However, the price is notated as 35c and the bar code box on the lower left hand corner of cover is blank. While viewing different websites, I've seen only issues that do have the bar code and the price is highlighted as "Still Only 35c", slightly different than my three. Do you think there is a difference in the general value?

Question #2, before the 10pt grading system was established, someone wanted to buy Tales of Suspense #39 that I own. They graded it as VF +. What do you think a competitive value is?

    Thank you very much.

    • Rob says:

The Spider-Man books are Whitman variants. These were books sold in Whitman 3-packs.

If you actually have a VF+ (which translates to 8.5 on the 10 point scale) then it would be worth maybe $15,000+. Whether or not it's actually VF+ is another matter entirely. Some dealers' VF+ 20 years ago would be a 6.0 (or worse) today. Feel free to follow-up via email if you have any other questions about the TOS 39.

      • Rich says:

Thank you very much sir. Re: the Whitman variants, if all things are equal between the conditions (whitman vs non whitman) is there a value difference? I have postings on "comic link" where the variant cover was allegedly worth more. Thanks again….

One thing I learned when the TOS was graded, was to keep it in plastic and not touch it. One of the few things that I have done right. Thanks for your quick response and this website. Check back tomorrow.

  129. Rich says:

A question about grading sir. As I try to conservatively assess the value of my collection, I've noticed that some older issues are in very good/fine condition…except…the color has yellowed on the edges of the cover and pages. Before I learned about properly storing them, no doubt they were exposed to light and the elements way back when. How much would that effect the grading of the issue or drop the grading?

    Thanks again.

  131. Richard says:

hi i have dragon lance 1st issue published dec 88 in sleve in mint or near mint condtion how much would it be worth and how do i no if its 1s print ? thanks

  132. Richard says:

how do i find if my comics are first print and whats up with the bar code bit ?

    • Rob says:

Most (99.9999999%) comics are 1st print, actually. It's rare to have a comic go to second print. If it's a 2nd print it will usually say it somewhere on the 1st page or inside front cover.

In that case, I think the blank UPC means it's a direct edition (sold only in comic shops.)

  133. Shauna says:

I trying to find out how much my comics I have are worth but I can't find anything that will help me out???

  134. don says:

iam looking for the price of some 20 to 50 year old comic books

    • Rob says:

Don, that's a pretty broad range. Values for books that fit that description could be anywhere between .10 and $750,000 or even $1,000,000 depending on the title, issue number and condition.

  135. jay says:

  136. Madison Dreyfuss says:

Hi, I recently purchased 6 comic books…Three which are Young Klondike issue #s 8,9,10 in volume 1 from June of 1898.And the other three are called War Weekly issue #s 41,54, and 60 something from 1878 volume 1. I've had no luck in finding values or other comics like these…I was hoping you could tell me more about it and possibly values and rarity….All six of the comics are in very good condition…Only thing mentionable would be the pages are yellow due to age but other than that very still in contact no damage…Please reply would be much appreciated..Thanks…

    • Rob says:

      Hi Madison,

They're not comics, which is why you're having a hard time finding info on them. They're what are called "dime novels" (in the States) or "penny dreadfuls" in England. I have no clue as to value and am not even sure that they're actively collected. They may be, I just don't know. They're far outside my area of expertise.

      • Madison Dreyfuss says:

Okay well thank you very much, hopefully I can find someone else that would know more…I have one more question this time actually involving a comic….I have a Our Gang Comic featuring Tom and Jerry…It was printed in Australia by The Pinnacle Press Printers, and Published by Frank Johnson. No where in the comic is there a year to be found nor the cartoonist who drew it..What really intrigues me is on the cover is Tom and Jerry and the colors are switched…Tom is brown and Jerry is grey..I tried looking information on this but all I could find was something about how it was either an error or that it was just the beginning of drawings of Tom and Jerry and they later switched it to what most comics of Tom and Jerry or featuring them as Tom grey and Jerry brown…I could not find at all any photos or information on this comic. The inside is black and white drawings, and the cover is in color. Also the drawings or printed drawings are very poor..Especially the Tom and Jerry..It seems that the drawings were when they first sketched them…I know with comics that most of the cartoons were improved to much better as the artsit evolved the cartoon…I was wondering if you knew any info on this one or could find some…I'm pretty sure it's very rare..If you would like pictures let me know and I will take some and send them to you…Hope to hear soon again…

        • Rob says:

It's probably a reprint of one of the US Dell comics. Mistakes like that can easily happen with reprints as the people doing the printing and separations are several steps removed from the original art and production team. I don't really deal with australian comics, especially reprints, so I can't give you much detail. The original american versions are worth between $5-200 depending on condition. Most of the time foreign reprints are worth significantly less than the originals.

Hey Rob, I've got a few comics I'm wondering about. The first is the "Famous First Prints" re-issue of the Detective Comics issue #1 of Batman. Near mint, been in my uncle's garage for 20, 30 years or so. Also I have what I think is a first issue of "Amazing Spiderman #129". It's in perfect mint condition, so I'm wondering if it's actually a reissue. And lastly, I have the first few issues of the Spiderman 2099 series. Worth anything?

  138. Leigh says:

    Hello,

I have a Spiderman Comic book I wanted to ask you about. I'm unsure of the year.
It's Spiderman, Legend of the Arachknight, "Torment", part 1 of 5. It says at the top "1st all-new collector's item issue".
It is also signed by Todd McFarlane.

    • Rob says:

      Hi Leigh,

that's one of the highest selling comic books of all time. That means there are a LOT of them left. So… with the exception of a couple of rare variant editions, they're not worth much. $1-2 maybe.

  139. Thad says:

    Hi Rob,

I have a near mint condition Groo the Wanderer #1 signed by the author (with a hand-drawn picture of Groo). It's been stored in the dark, in a mylar sleeve for 20 some years, only been handled 2-3 times. Is this worth anything?

    Thanks!

    • Rob says:

it might be worth a few dollars ($50 or so) if it's truly in 9.8/9.9 condition. It's probably not. The sketch will actually turn a few collectors off, to be honest. Some might be interested.

I have a friend who bought Conan the barbarian comics covered in plastic about 20 years ago for about 4 bucks a piece. They are dated back to 1966, and look in good condition.

Not having computer access, he asked me to go on the net and get a round about prices. Any ideas?
    Thanx.

  146. Kevin says:

    Rob~
I have a box of old comics, I am not sure what is in there and I need to get some sort of idea of their value, what is the easiest way I could go about doing this?? I have A LOT of comics, probably close to 200. So scans would take forever and be a ridiculous process. What can I do? thanks

    • Rob says:

The quickest way is to figure out what year's they're from. If they're from the 1980s, 1990s or 2000s the chances are they're not worth the effort of cataloging. I mean, they might be, but unless you're looking to put in the effort it's a safe enough bet to just socck them away for a few more years. If they're from the 1970s, they're probably not worth much either, but they could be so cataloging them into a list of title > issue # will got a long way. If they're from the 1960s or earlier, then you definitely want to put a list together.

Barring a list, you could (CAREFULLY) lay them out so I can see a good portion of each of the covers and take a few photos.

      • Kevin says:

Right off the top of my head I think most are 50s-70s, almost positive most are no more recent than the 80s. I was also worried about deterioration. These comics are in a cardboard box stashed away in the house. They aren't in any sort of plastic (at least most of them) so I assume this could significantly affect their value. I do need to get an idea of what is going on though, I have no idea what I have…

        • Rob says:

Another month under poor storage conditions isn't going to make all that much difference. The long-term storage damage has already been done (if it's been done at all.) I wouldn't worry too much about the storage conditions until you know what you have.

To do that, either send me an email ( rob.react@gmail.com ) with Title (not the story title, that's meaningless to me, the title on the cover) and issue # or, carefully, lay out the issues in groups of 20, take photos and email them to me.

          • Kevin says:

I am working on compiling a list…so far it looks like I have a lot of late 1970s books, but I'm not quite halfway through and have 130…once that list is done, I will send it to you via email. Thanks man

I have a comic book called "The Rider" from Ajax, a Farrell publication and on the bottom of the cover it says "Also Don't fence him in" I cant seem to find this comic ANYWHERE online so i have no idea the value of the comic. Any ideas

    • Rob says:

Published between 1957 and 1958, "The Rider" ran for 5 issues. Low book value for #1 is $17, low book value for the rest of the run is $8. NM value is $130 for the #1 and $85 for the rest of the run. Probably not a very popular title, but I can always be surprised.

  151. Mikel says:

I have some Walt Disney Donald Duck, Uncle Scrooge, Pluto, Porky Pig and Bugs Bunny comics ranging from 1956 to 1981, and was wondering if they are worth any substantial amount of money today. Some of the older ones are not in the best of shape, but they are not ripped or torn. Also, I have a small collection of Archie, and Horror comics that I was wondering about from around the same time range. Would you have any idea if they would be worth anything at all to a collector ?

    • Rob says:

That's a pretty broad time frame and a pretty broadd description. IF you had a list of titles and issue #s I could help you out a little more.

  157. Mark Beusse says:

I just found three old comic books at my grandmother's house. I'm not sure what the selling price is but I do know they are valuable.

The first is "The Mighty Thor" issue no.354 " Pickin' up the pieces" from April 1985, it is signed by Walter Simonson.

The next one is "Kitty Pryde and Wolverine" issue no. 6 " Honor" from April 1985, it is signed by Allen Milgrom.

The last one I found is an issue of " Power Pack" issue no.10 "Sea Hunt!" from May, 1985. It is signed by Louise Simonson.

I don't know enough to tell you what condition they are in; The covers are still attached and in very good shape, no stains or fading. The actual pages in the comic books are in good condition; the colors are still vibrant, no tears or folds, but the paper itself has aged and has a tiny hint of yellow.

Again, if you could send me an email I can forward you some pictures of them so you can get a more precise opinion on them. Thanks!
