Want a chance to learn more about your old comic books? Are you interested in their history, significance and potential value? If that sounds like you, then send me an EMAIL, preferably with high resolution scans or photos of the comic you're interested in learning more about and depending on how interesting it is, I might write about it for the site as a featured appraisal. I'll try to answer questions for anyone that sends in any book, but, depending on the volume, I can only guarantee that I'll write properly about books featured on the site.
Some notes:
- Only books from before 1980, please. Even books from the 1970s have very little chance of making it onto the site, but there are a few that would definitely be interesting to write about so I'll leave the cut-off at 1980.
- The appraisals are entertainment/informational purposes only – no certifications or exact valuations are given or guaranteed. Since I won't have the books in hand and will be judging condition from a scan, I will only provide informational estimates of condition and therefore value. If, after that, you need an official estimate for insurance purposes or want to get a solid estimate on the book in order to sell it I can put you in touch with someone trusted in your area to do a real appraisal.
The point of this offer is really to have some fun looking at old comics and educating people about old comics. Hard and fast valuations are for another venue.
- I need a good sized image- hopefully of the front and back. Scans should be 150-300dpi @100% and photos should be dumped right out of the camera as-is. I need as much detail as possible to judge condition. It's tough enough to estimate condition without the book in hand (so tough it's only a rough estimate and never an official pronouncement of grade.) It's impossible to do it with a small scan.
Thanks

Hello. I had the amazing opportunity to work with Elliot S. Maggin back in 2001. I am curious as to the estimated current value of his autographed books I have; although neither book is for sale!
At that time he signed his 2 books for me:
1.
Superman: Last Son Of Krypton, printed in 1978, hardcover, Book Club Edition… even Mr Maggin was surprised I have this print in almost mint condition!
2. Suprman: Miracle Monday, printed 1981, paperback, I believe this is a first edition/printing copy of the book.
Again both books are autographed and dated when signed July 2011.
I did not see how to email you photos of the books….. But I can if you email me your email!

hello,
I currently have a real nice(actually it's gorgeous) CGC 8.0 AF 15 w/restoration which includes cover cleaned, one tear sealed and one dot of color touch on spine.I am thinking of having color touch removed to get it from restored to conserved grade. Can tell me the approximate breakdown of price from 8.0 universal to 8.0 restored to maybe a 7.5 conserved?Do you think it is worth the money to do it?I would appreciate any help you can offer
By Rob Larsen March 6, 2018 - 9:46 pm
I don't have numbers to work off of, but my gut is that it wouldn't be that big of a bump. Although… who knows as the prices for restored/conserved silver age seem to be a little bit unpredictable. Looking at results for AF 15 in those categories the numbers are all over the place. If the color touch removal is cheap and would still get you in the VF range it might be worth a shot.

I have secret wars number 8 the first appearance of the black costume or should I say the origin of the black costume supposedly I know you said 80s but 84 and considering the popularity of the character and how much it's changed since then I figured this might be one of the exceptions you may be talking about. I mean it's a 10 out of 10 in condition but I'm no comic book raider but I have been collecting for a while.
By Rob Larsen December 28, 2020 - 10:29 pm
A CGC graded 9.8 copy would be worth something like $300-450. A CGC 10.0 would be worth somewhere north of $10,000. Those are rare, however. There have been 13428 copies of this book graded and only 4 are 10.0
By Barry Rabotnick April 10, 2021 - 8:17 pm
I used to collect but sold all of my stuff many years ago – or so I thought. I just found a copy of "Marvel Tales, issue #100, from April 1951. Covers and all pages are still attached and intact, but pretty well feathered up. More of a "reader" than a "collector" quality. I did a little looking around, but don't see much value info online. Is this just a keeper for the intrinsic cool factor, or does it have any resale value?
