Want a chance to learn more about your old comic books? Are you interested in their history, significance and potential value? If that sounds like you, then send me an EMAIL, preferably with high resolution scans or photos of the comic you're interested in learning more about and depending on how interesting it is, I might write about it for the site as a featured appraisal. I'll try to answer questions for anyone that sends in any book, but, depending on the volume, I can only guarantee that I'll write properly about books featured on the site.
Some notes:
- Only books from before 1980, please. Even books from the 1970s have very little chance of making it onto the site, but there are a few that would definitely be interesting to write about so I'll leave the cut-off at 1980.
- The appraisals are entertainment/informational purposes only – no certifications or exact valuations are given or guaranteed. Since I won't have the books in hand and will be judging condition from a scan, I will only provide informational estimates of condition and therefore value. If, after that, you need an official estimate for insurance purposes or want to get a solid estimate on the book in order to sell it I can put you in touch with someone trusted in your area to do a real appraisal.
The point of this offer is really to have some fun looking at old comics and educating people about old comics. Hard and fast valuations are for another venue.
- I need a good sized image- hopefully of the front and back. Scans should be 150-300dpi @100% and photos should be dumped right out of the camera as-is. I need as much detail as possible to judge condition. It's tough enough to estimate condition without the book in hand (so tough it's only a rough estimate and never an official pronouncement of grade.) It's impossible to do it with a small scan.
Thanks

Hey there.
I would love your opinion for the value of~
Ultimate Spider-Man Issue #1 Graded Gem/10
Venom vs Carnage Issue #1 Direct Edition Graded Gem/10
Venom Patterns Part 1 Issue #11Direct Edition Graded Gem/10
And one I find interesting is~
Ghost Rider Vol.2/Issue2 Gem/10
Not for Resale.
I appreciate any help very much.
My Son collected these and he's off to college, and I've no idea if they are worth anything.
Thank you~
Randy Richards
By Rob June 30, 2014 - 7:12 am
There are no CGC graded copies of Ultimate Spider-Man in 10- unless that's your grade?
Raw, that's probably $50-100. Graded 9.8s are like $200+
Venom vs. Carnage is probably $20-25 raw, in really nice shape.
I'm not sure what the Venom Patterns book is. If it's just Venom 11 from 2003, it's probably $5.
The Ghost Rider book is probably $5

Is there a market for a comic book that has the cover of one character and the book inside of a different group of heroes? How do I find out what it is worth?
By Rob June 30, 2014 - 6:59 am
There is definitely a market. The value is tough to pin down since these sort of errors are rare. What characters?
By Louis Bieringer June 30, 2014 - 2:40 pm
HI. The cover of the comic is DC comics The Flash #265 Sept. 44 pages for $0.50. The comic inside is Justice League of America Vol 19 #158 Sept 1978. Also DC comics.
By Louis Bieringer July 2, 2014 - 11:57 am
Ref: The Flash comic cover #265 with Justice League of America comic inside. This comic looks like it might grade pretty high. The cover has no noticeable marks. The staples look new. The pages are white like a new book.
By Rob July 2, 2014 - 12:00 pm
Interesting. I don't really know what it would sell for since it's so difficult to come up with comparable books, but it would do well, I think.
By Louis Bieringer July 2, 2014 - 6:00 pm
Who do you think I could contact to see what it might be worth?
By Rob July 2, 2014 - 9:46 pm
It's not really a question of who to contact. It's like… these things don't sell very often, as a class of comics, so even if you have all the info available it's difficult to predict.
By Becky July 4, 2014 - 10:09 am

By andrew July 29, 2014 - 4:36 pm
hi I have a Ghost Rider #1 September $.20 comic in OK condition, is something like that even worth looking to sell?
By Rob July 31, 2014 - 7:08 am
Definitely. That's a popular book. The value would depend on the technical condition, but it would sell for something as long as it's got a cover on it.
By Angela Jackson August 10, 2014 - 4:52 pm

Nothing is particularly valuable. They're all $1-5 books.
By Sean October 13, 2014 - 4:15 pm
Ok, so I know this is a recent comic but I want to try to find a value:
Signed (in black marker) by Matt Groening, Bill Morrison and Steve Vance
1st issue special edition Simpsons comics and stories
Also a silver leaf cover first issue bartman signed by Bill Morrison (in gold pen)
Both have never been touched
By Rob October 14, 2014 - 7:47 am
I have no idea. The Groening signature would be the one people would be interested in, I would think, but I have no idea of the base value for that comic and then I have even less idea what an unauthenticated signature would do to add value. With the exception of foreign comics, this is about as far out of my area of expertise as we get.

I am looking to clean my closet out and ran across to comic books but am afraid to sell them. I have a adventures of superman #500 signed by 5 people with a certifacte of authenticity. The comic is in white plastic with the logo and the whole thing is incased in another plastic for protection. This is 7615 of 10,000. I have always called it the resurection of superman. Although i do not collect comic books i Have been unable to let go of it. I also have the black plastic superman in the same condition as above but it is not signed. Neither has been opened. Can you tell me what these are worth. My email is morlangjason79@gmail.com .

By Rob December 2, 2014 - 11:39 am
You have nothing to fear selling them. Lots of people sell them all the time. Sadly, you won't get much for them. I think you'd get $20-40 for the superman 500. The Superman 75 you'd get $5-10 for.

It's probably not a 9.0 You can send me photos. A signed JIM 85 in the most likely condition (VG) would be around $500. A nicer copy would be worth more, of course.

Ah, well, if it's that sort of thing, you can take a look at what's on ebay nto get a sense of the reprints. The reprints are usually pretty easy to discern. There aren't any confusing replicas like there are for some books.
By Tom Moore January 29, 2015 - 11:32 am
I have a issue of The New Teen Titans 1st Collectors Item Issue No.1 November. To my knowledge it hasn't been out of the protective sleeve. The tape that is keeping the protective sleeve sealed hasn't been removed or tampered with. Even though I cant see a year it was printed im thinking its a early or mid 1980's issue. what would it be worth?
By Rob January 29, 2015 - 12:08 pm
Comic books generally don't come in plastic, so whether or not the tape has been "tampered with" means almost nothing in regards to the condition. Someone would have bought that comic off the shelf and then put it into a bag. What they did with it before they put it in the bag makes the difference with regards to condition. They could have eaten a meatball sub while reading it or they could have read it with white gloves on.
Also, depending on the type of bag and type of tape, it could actually damage the comic to be in a bag that long.
That said, assuming it's from 1980 (white cover?) and it's in nearly perfect shape it could be worth $50 to $200. It would be worth much less if the guy ate a meatball sub.

I am in need of assistance. Hulk 271 first full color appearance of rocket raccoon. there is one with spiderman in a box and then a barcode. which is first print and which is second print?
By Rob January 30, 2015 - 9:54 am
They're both first print. second prints of comics were very, very, very, very rare up until the 1990s. What you're seeing is the difference between newsstand and direct market copies.

not that recent, at least a couple years old
By Rob March 10, 2015 - 9:40 pm
In the context of this site, it is. I mostly am interested in books from the late 1930s through the 1970s. That's why the first note on this post is:
Really, anything from 2000 or so is "new" in the context of this site.

i have action comics no.1 June 1938. I was wondering what it's worth. I've been looking around & the cover seems different. For example, there's no price like 10cents on it & the guy with a tie is wearing a green tie with yellow polka dots instead of red. It has 13 page of superman(colored). 6 page of black & white Chuck Dawson. It has Zatara, South sea strategy,sticky-mitt Stimson, the adventures of Marco Polo, pep Morgan, scoop scanlon, tex thomson, stardust, and some ads in the back cover
By Rob March 9, 2015 - 10:00 pm
It's a reprint. The USPS 1998 reprint. It's not worth much, especially since it's missing an outer cover.

Hey Rob,
I just found what I think is a 1972 DC Comics Superman and Green Arrow comic book. The cover says No. 210 MAR., 30730. It's been in my mom's cedar chest, most likely since I was a kid. It's in so so condition. All pages, covers, etc. are intact but it's been "flipped through" a bit. Anything you can tell me about it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
By Rob April 16, 2015 - 2:10 pm
It'd be worth $2-5. The title of the comic is "World's Finest" and it featured Superman teaming up with other characters.

Have a UK edition number one of MAD magazine published 1959. It is signed by Matt drucker? I am told he was one of the artists and his art work is very collectable. I don't know whether he contributed to edition 1 as it was signed in USA at some point after 1959. Fair condition any idea of value or how I check authenticity. From a loft clearance packed in boxes!
By Rob July 13, 2015 - 8:34 am
You could use CBCS to check for authenticity. I have no idea as to value since it's a unique piece.

It would really depend on the condition. In really nice shape (which is different to a collector than it would be to you) many of them are valuable ($10s or even over $100 dollars). I'd personally be interested in a couple. But only if they're in really nice shape. If you want to email me photos @ rob.react@gmail.com I can give you a better idea.

X-men Roughed up by Hercules, Dec '96
By Rob August 18, 2015 - 8:56 am
The issue number is more important than the name of the story. I'm going to guess that this is X-Men 59 and is worth $1-3
