Want a chance to learn more about your old comic books? Are you interested in their history, significance and potential value? If that sounds like you, then send me an EMAIL, preferably with high resolution scans or photos of the comic you're interested in learning more about and depending on how interesting it is, I might write about it for the site as a featured appraisal. I'll try to answer questions for anyone that sends in any book, but, depending on the volume, I can only guarantee that I'll write properly about books featured on the site.
Some notes:
- Only books from before 1980, please. Even books from the 1970s have very little chance of making it onto the site, but there are a few that would definitely be interesting to write about so I'll leave the cut-off at 1980.
- The appraisals are entertainment/informational purposes only – no certifications or exact valuations are given or guaranteed. Since I won't have the books in hand and will be judging condition from a scan, I will only provide informational estimates of condition and therefore value. If, after that, you need an official estimate for insurance purposes or want to get a solid estimate on the book in order to sell it I can put you in touch with someone trusted in your area to do a real appraisal.
The point of this offer is really to have some fun looking at old comics and educating people about old comics. Hard and fast valuations are for another venue.
- I need a good sized image- hopefully of the front and back. Scans should be 150-300dpi @100% and photos should be dumped right out of the camera as-is. I need as much detail as possible to judge condition. It's tough enough to estimate condition without the book in hand (so tough it's only a rough estimate and never an official pronouncement of grade.) It's impossible to do it with a small scan.
Thanks

I have a 1978-79 Micronauts issue #3 with the diamond logo in the top corner and no barcode, which means it's direct/non-newstand issue. I've done some reading to determine that it is a first-print and not a second print that was part of a package that included the first three issues. From what I gather, the direct issues did have a much smaller run than the newstand issues, which could make it worth more, though I know that's not necessarily true. I've found the value to be around $4 for the non-diamond issue, but am wondering if the diamond issue is worth anymore. Thanks.

My Tather has a Marvel Comics Group April, 1971 Vol. 1 No.1 The Tomb of Dracula, Dracula Lives comic and is interested in how much it is worth. It is in great condition. Your feed back would be greatly appreciated.
By Rob August 28, 2012 - 6:57 am
It would depend on the technical condition. "great" can mean a lot of things. It could be anywhere from probably $50 to $1000s depending on how great.

Hello,
I have a SEALED 1994 Adventures of Superman #500 with 5 autographs and Certificate of Authenticity. I know its not that old, but I am curious as to what its worth. I have done some research but all the copies that I can find only have one autograph on them. Mine is in the white bag and not the platinum black bag. If you could e-mail me a rough estimate of what its worth and/or someone who may be interested in purchasing this from me I would greatly appreciate it! I will send you pictures if needed but I assume the "Sealed" pretty much explains its self! Thanks,
Nick

Everyone owns copies of those "death of superman" books. It's not a hot title. You can buy one on ebay for $20.

Hi, Nice to see you're still doing this great service for us. I have a double-sized fiftieth issue Star Trek Comic from July 1983 in ABSOLUTELY PRISTINE condition. It has never been out of the heavy duty plastic sleeve it came in. Any value at all? I had someone want to buy it but I told them I have no idea what it is worth and they didn't offer, obviously because they didn't want to bid against themselves. Any ideas?

I had most of the star heathcliff iseuss (still do, somewhere), a few thundercats ones, a couple top dog ones, planet terry, some girly one like strawberry shortcake, and I think wally wizard and/or royal roy (I got the planet terry, first top dog, girly, and if I had the wally wizard and/or royal roy ones those too in a multipack sampler), silverhawks, and peter porker. I've also downloaded scans of all the heman ones, and some other odds & ends.

Hi Rob!
I tried scrolling to find an answer…but it was just too long a thread to find one! I have some 1992 collectible Archie Comic trading cards; pretty much the whole collection complete with the hologram special cards.
Are they worth anything? Do you think they will be if I hold onto them for the future?
They're in Mint condition; and are currently stored in a box in individual plastic sleeves.
By wayne September 29, 2012 - 8:02 pm
i have a few star trek the next generation comic books that i was wondering what they were worth,…. One says its an Annual Star Trek the next generation #4 1993 and a Star Trek invites you to the 25th anniversary with 40 pages and a stamp that says approved by the comics code authority. I have some Punisher comics of punisher versus spiderman and the punisher versus his son.
By Caden October 2, 2012 - 3:05 am
Hello…i already know the current value of all my comics… but i was wondering if one in perticular will ever be worth value in the future…say 20-30 years from now. "the death of superman" it is in mint condition. it has not been opened from it package. My mother bought two copies. one to read and one to keep.
By Caden October 2, 2012 - 3:08 am
also the complete collection of "funeral for a friend"
By Rob October 2, 2012 - 7:18 am
Probably not. As you can see by browsing the comments on this post… everyone owns that comic book The things that are going to be valuable in the future are the things that are difficult to find. I'm pretty sure I could buy 10,000 copies of the death of superman if I wanted them by putting out ads looking for people who are sitting on unopened boxes.
By Caden October 2, 2012 - 3:59 pm
i did read the above comments… your a lil bit rude. you should work on that
By Rob October 2, 2012 - 4:16 pm
I'm not sure how I'm rude. I'm sorry that I gave you an answer you didn't like about the value of your comic book, but that's the reality of most books from the 1990s and is especially true for the "death of superman" books. They're never going to be worth much. The books that will be worth money in 20 years are not the ones that were on CNN and sold in the millions of copies. There aren't millions of people clamoring for that book right now and there never will be.
If I were really rude I would stop answering questions about books from the 1990s altogether since they're mostly worthless.

I wanted to know how much this magazine would be worth, or who should I take it to to find out. Thank you!

I have shall i say inheritted my brothers collection of comics. I know nothing about any of this stuff. I have 8 comic book boxes full of comics and do not know what to do with any of them. Haven't a clue value or if I should keep them or anything. Any help on who or where I could go to find out worth? Thanks.
By Dawn Orner January 31, 2013 - 8:47 pm
I do know that he has G.I. Joe, Spawn, Static, The Maxx, Gen13, Robin, Wolverine, Cable, Scud to name a few.
By Rob February 1, 2013 - 7:01 am
If the books are from the 1990s they are, at this point, mostly worthless. IF you have a local comic shop they can maybe take a look to see if any of the valuable book from that era are in the collection.
By Dawn Orner February 1, 2013 - 11:01 am
Thanks will do that! Have some from the 80s but from what I have read on here I am assuming that they are not worth much either. In your opinion, should we try to sell the whole collection as one. Or shall we try to seperate and sell individual (spiderman, gi goe etc….)?

i have a marvel fanfare #1 first issue 1982 in mint condition in the plastic still. whats it worth?
By Rob March 10, 2013 - 8:51 pm
A CGC 9.8 copy (nearly perfect) would sell for around $20-30. Of course, you;d have to get it graded first.
By Amanda March 9, 2013 - 12:02 pm
I have the 1st appearance of Wolverine The Incredible Hulk #181. I saw on the internet that it went in an auction for $150,000. My copy has a small crease in the upper right hand corner but other than that seems to be in really good condition. I was wondering if you think mine could go for that much or anywhere near that number. The comic has been in a frame since it was purchased.
By Amanda March 9, 2013 - 12:17 pm
Or actually the first full appearance of Wolverine. I know that Wolverine also appeared in The Incredible Hulk #180 but wasn't named until #181.
By Rob March 10, 2013 - 8:47 pm
It's not worth $150,000. With a small crease, the best it could possible be is probably $7-900. The $150,000 sale was for the best copy in the world. Unfortunately, for you, there are a lot of copies in the same condition as yours.
By Amanda March 16, 2013 - 5:29 pm
That's what I figured thank you!

I have a collection of over 40,000 comics and 350,000 cards (baseball, football and basket ball. They are all well cared for and are stored in standard boxes that collectors use. Comics 400 per box Cards 4,000 per box.
Comics are from the 1970's thru 2011. (Most after 1990)
Cards are from 1980's thru 2011. (Most after 2000)
I am interested in a donation value that can be documented for IRS purposes. I am donating the lot to a local church.
I see that bulk comics are sold for .25 to .50 cents and bulk card for .2 to .4 cents. Would this be reasonable.
Thanks for your input.
By Rob March 29, 2013 - 10:31 am
I have no idea about the cards. That seems reasonable for the comics.

By Shawn fordyce July 18, 2013 - 9:00 pm
My grandmother has a superman issue #2 1930s or 40s it was wen superman first came out. Litterly 2nd issue #2 I heard its worth over 100,000. Bux is that true?
By Rob July 19, 2013 - 12:48 pm
It depends on the condition. A really nice one would probably be over $100,000. A really bad one would be a few thousand dollars.
By Rob July 19, 2013 - 12:48 pm
Probably more like $1. There are a lot of them.
By D July 23, 2013 - 12:20 am
c'mon, are these all real questions? I swear some must be from friends pulling your chain but they were all fun to read and you answered most of them without getting too rude.

Hi I have archie comics from the 50's and 60's as well as the first oliver twist books, and veronica and jughead early editions. approx. what would I ask. some sold for as low as 13 cents per copy.

I found a 1937 newspaper comic section in my home, good condition. colors vivid, no tears and was told to get it appraised. I wss wondering if you agree its worth paying the money for an appraisal
By Rob August 2, 2013 - 10:05 am
I don't really know about newspaper comics. I deal with comic books exclusively. Same art form, different type of collectible.
By Katy August 2, 2013 - 10:03 am
Curious on where to start?
Inherited an old comic book collection when my brother died.
Stuck with how to begin to list/document/store them to then begin to find out values?
What info of the book is helpful to get a quote on worth?
Thanks in advance.
By Rob August 2, 2013 - 10:04 am
The title and the issue number are the basic currency of an appraisal. Condition mattes if you have something useful to look at but if you don't have books that people want, condition doesn't matter.
How old are the books?
By Katy August 2, 2013 - 10:19 am
Several are quite old, I am thinking he picked them up at garage sales as a kid, etc. as he wasn't that old.
But it's quite an avid collection.
They are all stacked in piles in old hammermill paperboxes.
Thinking first step would be to get them out of the boxes and sort by character or marvel vs. dc piles to start, as that's what most are?
Either way, if I sell them or not, I figure they'd make a great collection and i'd like to keep them nice.
By Rob August 2, 2013 - 10:21 am
Quite old? 1930s? 1970s? For some people 1980s would be quite old, I guess.
By Katy August 2, 2013 - 10:30 am
haha sorry, several are 30's, several are 50-60's, most are 70's & 80's.
So I will sort them out and start a list then, by series, title and issue #.
Thanks. 🙂
By Rob August 2, 2013 - 10:37 am
Very cool. Start with the earlier books. In general those are going to be the most valuable. You can send me a list @ rob.react@gmail.com
By Katy August 2, 2013 - 10:44 am
It may take me a little time, but will start and will mark this to send you a list.
Appreciate your help!!

Dallas or Tulsa? The Dallas book is about $5. I think Tulsa is rarer and worth a little bit more.

28) 1968 Daredevil volume 1 issue 45
29) 1968 Daredevil volume 1 issue 46
I also have 8 more comics without covers to which there is no info for these issues on the inner pages like the others. I know that one is Thor, one is Iron Man, two are The Fantastic Four, one is Scooby Doo, and one is Disney's Goofy. I have no clue what the other two would be of. All of are decent quality, just minus a cover and yellowing from age. All are from about the late 1960's to I'd say 1970's.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
By Rob September 6, 2013 - 7:29 am
Without covers they're worth no more than $1 or $2 apiece. None of the books are extremely valuable. They're all good, collectible comics, just not super important issues.
By Stephen Platt September 7, 2013 - 12:45 pm
Hello –
Is there any market out there for three, larger sized (10' X 13') original 1978 comics, intact, although not preserved comics)? FIRST is Marvel Treasury Edition Vol. 1, No. 18, The Astonishing Spider-man, co-starring the X-Men. SECOND is DC Collectors' Edition, Vol. 7, No. C-56 (Superman vs. Muhammad Ali. THIRD is DC Collectors' Edition, Vol. 7, No. C-58 (Superman vs. Shazam (Captain Marvel).
Please let me know. Thanks.
By Rob September 25, 2013 - 7:36 am
There's some value. The Superman vs Ali book is a classic. They're just hard to sell and to store. Not as many people collect those as would collect equivalent books from the same era that were regular sized.

So these books would be from 1994? What comics?
By Robin September 21, 2013 - 9:34 pm
These were my father-in-laws from when he was a child. I know nothing about comic books, but would say these are in fairly good condition…only a few have some minor tears, the color is good, pages aren't brittle. Are any of these worth anything?

Hello! I have the first issue of The Walking Dead 2003 Image Publishing print in MT/NMT condition. It has been bagged and boarded since original purchase. Any ideas?
By Rob April 11, 2014 - 2:14 pm
Hey Kristy, I normally don't do comics newer than 1980 AND I normally don't get comics that are worth much money when people ask me for appraisals here. You are the exception on both counts because I both know the value of Walking Dead #1 and I know that it's actually really valuable for a book as new as it is. Depending on the condition (it really should be graded by CGC) it could be worth hundreds or in rare cases thousands of dollars.
By Kristy April 12, 2014 - 8:25 pm
Thank you Rob! I just emailed you some pictures of the comic to see if you can give me a rough estimate on it. I am looking to sell it but don't want to give it away or ask too much for it.

The Deathmate and the Detective are worth like $1 each. The Marvel Tales would be worth $5-10.

Can you please give me any information and value on this rare book. I have the Mickey Mouse Book 1 2nd printing variant with the Christmas greeting from Mickey Mouse printed inside the front cover dated December 27,1930. The overstreet says only one known copy to exist but I have one at a higher grade than the one mentioned in the overstreet. I have contact overstreet over the past few years but they have not changed information on the book. Mine is graded and sealed by pgx as 8.5 with white pages. I have also had one overstreet adviser look at this copy and confirm original copy. Because no copies of this are ever sold I am told the value never changes because they only have one sale to base the value on. I have been guarantied $50,000 at auction but would not part with for that because it could never be replaced. thank you for any and all information.

Hi,
I think you've got some sense of the value already. If you would like the nuanced discussion the book deserves it might be worthwhile posting in the Golden Age section of the CGC forum. http://boards.collectors-society.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=postlist&Board=15&page=1

The 1973 book is like… $20-40, I think. The other one is probably a $5-10 book.

I don't know much about comics but i found one in my house when I moved in.
It's The Punisher Magazine. Vol 1, Number 1 October 1989
It's in a protective slip and in mint condition.

In average condition it's worth probably $5-10. In nicer shape, more. Feel free to send me a photo @ rob.react@gmail.com
