Want a chance to learn more about your old comic books? Are you interested in their history, significance and potential value? If that sounds like you, then send me an EMAIL, preferably with high resolution scans or photos of the comic you're interested in learning more about and depending on how interesting it is, I might write about it for the site as a featured appraisal. I'll try to answer questions for anyone that sends in any book, but, depending on the volume, I can only guarantee that I'll write properly about books featured on the site.
Some notes:
- Only books from before 1980, please. Even books from the 1970s have very little chance of making it onto the site, but there are a few that would definitely be interesting to write about so I'll leave the cut-off at 1980.
- The appraisals are entertainment/informational purposes only – no certifications or exact valuations are given or guaranteed. Since I won't have the books in hand and will be judging condition from a scan, I will only provide informational estimates of condition and therefore value. If, after that, you need an official estimate for insurance purposes or want to get a solid estimate on the book in order to sell it I can put you in touch with someone trusted in your area to do a real appraisal.
The point of this offer is really to have some fun looking at old comics and educating people about old comics. Hard and fast valuations are for another venue.
- I need a good sized image- hopefully of the front and back. Scans should be 150-300dpi @100% and photos should be dumped right out of the camera as-is. I need as much detail as possible to judge condition. It's tough enough to estimate condition without the book in hand (so tough it's only a rough estimate and never an official pronouncement of grade.) It's impossible to do it with a small scan.
Thanks

I have a Superman Collector's Set #500 unopened it is numbers 1729/10000, has 5 signatures, I have been offered #1,000.00 is it worth that or more?
By Rob January 6, 2012 - 11:46 pm
If you were offered $1,000 for that book take the money, make sure it's actual currency, and then run. Run as fast as you can, before the person who gave you $1,000 for that book realize how stupid they are.
By Tommie January 21, 2012 - 2:48 pm
Hi Rob, can you please let me know how much it worth now as I got one of this in unopened condition also, mine is 483/10000, thanks.
By Rob January 21, 2012 - 5:18 pm
It's worth $5-25 on ebay.
By Rob January 21, 2012 - 5:51 pm
For reference, three people have asked me about the exact same comic in the past 2 weeks. If all of you have a copy and found your way here, how many off those 10,000 are still stored away? Answer? All of them.

Rob, I've got a pile of pulp that dates from 1934 (weird tales) thru the 60s' One in particular, Captain zero- Vol. 1 #1 nov. '49. Any value there? Fair cond. at best. Thanks!
By Rob January 12, 2012 - 9:05 pm
There's definitely value in them, condition is really key with those though, so there's not a ton of value. High grade copies of good covers or interesting content can be $100s or $1000s. The ones you have are probably in the $5-$50 range.
By Mark R. January 12, 2012 - 11:46 pm
What about captain zero? I have 7 more First editions vol. 1 from different publications that would be considered in good + condition. is it worth looking into? (there are 35 + different publications)
By Rob January 12, 2012 - 11:59 pm
Captain Zero falls in the $30-75 range. I'm not a huge pulp expert, unfortunately.
By Richard January 13, 2012 - 9:59 am
I am looking to sell 15,000 comics about 99% of them from the boom period 1988 to 2001. What is your best reccomendation or contact?
By Rob January 13, 2012 - 10:23 am
Tough books to sell. Mile High, Gary Dolgoff and Neat Stuff spring to mind. I have no clue what you could realize for books like that, especially considering they have to move that many books.
Alternatively, you could set up a local show and just stick a .25 sign on all the boxes. It would probably work out to the same money. I'd cherry pick if you were going to do that, of course. There are probably more than a few books in the collection worth selling individually.
By Melinda McClendon January 13, 2012 - 12:38 pm
I have 2 "the Amazing Spider-Man" comic with .35 on both. One is 181 other is 186 Nov. Have one "the Amazing Spider-Man" comic with .30 that is 171 issue. All three of these issues are in binders and well preserved. Have had for yrs and just kind of picked up at a sale somewhere yrs ago. Any idea what they would be worth now?
By Rob January 14, 2012 - 8:15 am
With those it would really depend on the condition. Super nice copies would be sought after, since it's Amazing Spider-Man. Average copies would be something like $2-5. Superb copies would be worth maybe 10X that.
By Denise R January 14, 2012 - 12:52 am
Hello I have a Fantastic 4 issue #201 from Dec 1978 comic book that was a gift to me, and I would just like to know about how much it is worth? It is in good condition, not perfect, but for being from a thrift store, its ok. (no stains, rips, etc) I seen two on Ebay for $4, and on some other site selling for the same price. Just a guesstimate to what it is worth would be nice.
By Rob January 14, 2012 - 8:13 am
That's about right. In average to nice condition it would be worth something like $1-5.

By Rob February 20, 2012 - 10:57 am
Depending on the technical condition, both GI Joe #1 and #2 could be worth anywhere from $1 to about $150. The top end is for a CGC 9.8 copy like this one: http://www.mycomicshop.com/search?ItemID=22646657
By Steve February 20, 2012 - 2:05 pm
Rob, love the page, and reading the questions along with some of your responses has been very entertaining. Anyway, I'm on the hunt for Marvel Vol. 1 Red Sonja issues. I need #'s 7, 8, and 11 in CGC 9.8 white pages to complete the set. If you happen upon any of these, and they are for sale, could you drop me a line. Thanks, Steve.

We have a comic book that we would like to know more about. Can you help us out?
The Amazing Spider-Man, volume 17, Jan 8, 1964, Mint Condition.
Thank you for any help!
By Rob February 24, 2012 - 8:51 am
It would depend on the technical condition. It's probably not mint. If it actually was it would be worth something like $15,000 or more. An average condition copy would be worth $50 – $150.
By Aviddcklecter February 24, 2012 - 10:29 am
They are mint sealed in the wrap hardcover book. I have been an avid collector for 10 years and these were handed down to me. Do you no anything about tge value of these books?

My son recieved a Marvel Special Edition Star Wars (Collectors Edition) Volume #1, #1 Comic book. It has the Whitman logo and was $1.00 at time of purchase back in the day. It was copy written in 1977. Published by Marvel Comics Group Galton, Stan Lee. I was wondering how much is this comic book worth.
I am not looking to sell it. However if it is worth something then I would like to insure it.
Thanks.

By Rob May 14, 2012 - 9:39 pm
Maybe $500-600?

Thanks for the insight, I was wondering if made any difference if it was slabbed by CGC or not.
By zeroheero July 25, 2012 - 9:27 pm
Yes it does… buyers pay much more for a book that has been graded by CGC
By Rob July 26, 2012 - 7:18 am
It does. For a mid-grade Golden Age book the value is in the restoration check. that alone would be worth the grading fee.

hay Rob, I have a spider man number one of the torment series but mine is graded at 9.6 how much would this be worth?
By Rob June 10, 2012 - 8:24 pm
Is it CGC graded? Maybe the cost of grading? $25. I could check GPA, but… I want to be sure it's CGC graded. Otherwise, it's just like the other 1,000,000 copies of that book sitting in boxes.

I have The hands os shang-shi master of kung fu, #54 and a the mighty thor #282, any idea if they are anything special? and what might they be worth?

Hi Rob,
I have the original Thor – Journey Into Mystery – in not so great condition. What would that be worth? Also, I have Thor – Journey into Mystery from books 100 – 110, minus 107. They are in mint condition, having been kept in plastic sleeves, no bends, no fraying, no tears. If those have any value, would auctioning them off be a good idea?
Thanks
By Rob June 10, 2012 - 8:27 pm
Journey into Mystery 83? It would depend on the technical condition.
As for the other books, there's a LONG gap between no tape and no fraying to "mint" Feel free to send me scans or photos @ rob.react@gmail.com

I have a Conan Saga July 3 marvel magazine. near mint condition–I was reviewing the inside of the comic and noticed that one of the stories includes the editors notes along the sides of the strips. I know it is the writers notes during the story board because the names match the creators of the comic. Does this do anything to the print value-it's printed in the book. I can send pictures if you would like to see it. Thank you for your time on this.
By Rob July 17, 2012 - 7:15 am
I think that's just the way the book was printed. I don't think it does anything to the value.

You'd be better off just searching the completed listings on eBay. I don't know anything about those books. I'd guess they'd be worth .25 each, but I could be wrong.

I have a 1978 The astonishing Spider-man comic book, giant-sized, marvel treasury edition #18 in very good condition. I was just wondering, is it worth anything?
By Rob July 26, 2012 - 7:19 am
Treasuries are basically impossible to sell. The book might have some guide value, but treasuries (being huge) just aren't practical to sell.

I have a copy of The Flintstones from 1972. The only info I could find out about it from the internet is at the following website. http://digestcomics.blogspot.com/2008/05/flintstones-1972.html
My copy has been stamped on the front cover and the pages are yellowed but otherwise is in good condition. How much would this be worth?
Thank you!
By Rob August 20, 2012 - 7:06 am
it lists for $40 in near mint. I have no clue what it would sell for at retail. Strange book.

I have some comics from a newspaper in nineteen-fourty-eight. fair condition. Was wondering what a black and white Donald Duck comic strip would go for with Walt Disney's John Hanncok on it.
By Rob August 20, 2012 - 7:02 am
i know the difference might not be readily apparent to you, but I know next to nothing about comic strips from the newspaper.
By BO August 10, 2012 - 5:10 pm
I have a SPIDER MAN, Collector's Item Issue it good conditon is it even worth anything
By Rob August 20, 2012 - 6:57 am
the most important thing to know about "collector's item" comics is that they're almost always worthless. Almost any spider-man comic with that on the cover has been bought and hoarded by the box. Still, what # and title is on the front of the comic.
By Kevin August 10, 2012 - 10:56 pm
Hi Rob,
What is a Showcase #13 worth on fine condition (6.0)?
Have several other silver age comics )superman, superboy, Mickey mouse etc.) but this comic is the most viable because of its significance. Thoughts on value?
By Rob August 20, 2012 - 6:55 am
unrestored, about $1000.
By Brad August 12, 2012 - 2:48 pm
I have a couple boxes of comics, which I stored in conventional comic storage bags and backed with acid free backing (and they have been stored this way for about 20 years. All the comics were read once and then shelf stored for about 10 years. I would say that with the exception of yellowing pages, the comics are in great (obviously not a grading term) condition. All pages are intact, corners are square, colors are bright.
Can you give an average assessment for what a 'likely condition' of these comics would be? The comics are marvel and from 1972-1976. Once again,
I understand the difficulty of grading these comics without actually seeing the books. But, would you just give a general assessment?
Thanks.
By Rob August 20, 2012 - 6:54 am
I can't possibly do that. Your description, compared to the details I would actually look for are going to be so far apart it's not even worth it as an exercise in speculation. To you a book in "great" condition could easily be anywhere from 6.0 up to 9.4 or better and simply knowing that the books have been in bags and boards since 1990 doesn't tell me anything about their first twenty years in the world.
By Brad August 23, 2012 - 8:18 pm
That's fair, but I had to try. I appreciate the response.
