Want a chance to learn more about your old comic books? Are you interested in their history, significance and potential value? If that sounds like you, then send me an EMAIL, preferably with high resolution scans or photos of the comic you're interested in learning more about and depending on how interesting it is, I might write about it for the site as a featured appraisal. I'll try to answer questions for anyone that sends in any book, but, depending on the volume, I can only guarantee that I'll write properly about books featured on the site.
Some notes:
- Only books from before 1980, please. Even books from the 1970s have very little chance of making it onto the site, but there are a few that would definitely be interesting to write about so I'll leave the cut-off at 1980.
- The appraisals are entertainment/informational purposes only – no certifications or exact valuations are given or guaranteed. Since I won't have the books in hand and will be judging condition from a scan, I will only provide informational estimates of condition and therefore value. If, after that, you need an official estimate for insurance purposes or want to get a solid estimate on the book in order to sell it I can put you in touch with someone trusted in your area to do a real appraisal.
The point of this offer is really to have some fun looking at old comics and educating people about old comics. Hard and fast valuations are for another venue.
- I need a good sized image- hopefully of the front and back. Scans should be 150-300dpi @100% and photos should be dumped right out of the camera as-is. I need as much detail as possible to judge condition. It's tough enough to estimate condition without the book in hand (so tough it's only a rough estimate and never an official pronouncement of grade.) It's impossible to do it with a small scan.
Thanks

There are a lot of people out there with those very same books. I think the Supeman 75 is worth something like $5-10 and the rest would all sell for $1 or $2.

I have two big boxes of Conan Magazines……(mostly from the 70's and 80's) as well as many of the soft-cover Conan books. They were my brothers.
Do you have any idea what these magazines may be worth? I read where the author committed suicide at age 30. How sad.
I know that a new Conan movie just came out.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

Hi. I've got several comics but can find general values on ebay for most – my question relates to one with a double cover – Weird War Tales – Issue No. 50 (1977) in quite good condition (I've not had it judged professionally) – is it worth any more because of the double covers? Thanks!

I have 35 cent variant issues of Godzilla 1,2 and 3 from 1977. Never been graded. I was just a kid when I bought them off the news stand. I have 2 copies of #2, one of which I bought about 10 years ago, bagged and in "NM" condition, before I started hearing about the 35 cent variant deal. Are these worth having graded professionally? I know the copies I purchased and read a million times as a kid are not in great condition.
By Rob September 9, 2011 - 7:37 am
the "NM" copies would be worth getting grade if they're really nice.

Hello,
I have a Marvel Rogue vol.1 num 1, on the front it say's "first issue collector's item", the title is in golds writing, it's still in it's plastic and it's in great condition. Could it be worth anything? i can send a picture if you want.
Thanks for your time

By Rob September 16, 2011 - 7:09 pm
Hi,
Comics rarely com in plastic bags, so the fact that it's in a bag says nothing about the condition.
That said, The Human Fly, even in the best possible condition, might be worth $5-10 at most. It's probably worth .50.

I have a 1978 Superman trash can that I bought when the Movie came out. I've just kept it on the shelf since then, using it to store soft toys. A recent visitor told me that it is one of the rarest of the collectables from that Movie. True? If so, approximately what is it worth? It is in "Good" condition, as I've obviously never used it for Garbage.

I have 344 comic books (all inventoried on an excel spreadsheet). Most are from the 90's to present, but some are from the 70's & 80's. I inventoried them & put a $$ on them using the website http://www.comicspriceguide.com, just to get an idea if they were worth anything. Not surprising, most are worth face value or not much more. I have a few Johnny the Homicidal Maniacs, Primal, Goons & Hellraisers that appear to be the higher values.
There is one in particular I have a question about.
1983 – Marvel Comics Group – Star Wars – Issue #68. I did a search on eBay to see what they were selling for. I noticed there are two editions of this issue. In the left bottom corner, one has a UPC and the other has the head of spiderman. Mine has the UPC. However, on the left hand side, the entire length of the comic book, it is lighter than the rest of the book. It does not look to be damaged, but a possible misprint / printing error.
Do you know of any printing errors for this specific issue? Would you be interested in seeing a picture?
Appreciate any help you can give!
By Charlene October 27, 2011 - 3:07 pm
CORRECTION: The printing error is down the RIGHT side, not left.
By Rob October 27, 2011 - 3:09 pm
You would be extremely lucky to get face value for the books from the 1990s.
That printing error doesn't sound like something people would be particularly interested in collecting.

Hi, I recently inherited some comics, I have been writing down info. on them except I didn't write down the original sale price listed on the comic, but I am trying to look up how to grade while during all thise. All these comics date pretty much from 1973 to 1977 ish. Marvel, dc, spire, harvey, whitman etc. In the process I came across one in the box that is called IRON FIST, it is #15, i didn't write down if it is the 30 cent or 35 cent issue. It is in absolutely amazing shape, like it just came from the store..except the coloring of the inner pages. I have seen some prices on these and I am shocked to see this issue to be worth that amount. Any chance of you viewing a picture of it and helping me on learning how to grade and from that point direct me to someone in my area that could do a grade on this issue if it is that valueable..thanks deb

Wow, no idea on that one. I don't really know much about posters. I would set up an ebay alert if i were you, to see if someone else sells one.

Hi there,
I have a copy of Marvel's Comic Album no.2, I can hardly find anything on the internet about one of these and I was wanting to know if it was worth anything? It is in very good condition.
Also, I have a copy of The Flinstones Annual from 1967, how much are they generally worth?
Thanks so much for your time?
Nicholas

I'm not sure what you have. Is it a local reprint?
By Scott November 14, 2011 - 10:49 pm
Rob:
I just happened to come across your site…great stuff and I'm amazed at how dedicated you are. I'm currently going through my comic book collection – mostly Marvel from the 70's. Once I get around to cataloguing it, if you don't mind, I'd like to get your opinion on any issues of worth or the collective value of it as I'm thinking I'll try to sell it if there is anything of worth. Do you find that the current superhero movie trend impacts the value of comic books at all? Lastly, can you give me your thoughts on the value of Black Lightning No. 2 from May 1977? Thanks.

originial
what is the selling price for it
i have several
and old spidermans
how can i sell them quick and for the highest price
i have seen my conan for over 600,000
but now i cant find that site
By Rob November 25, 2011 - 5:50 pm
You could buy the best copy of every printed Conan comic and pulp ever produced for less than $600,000, so I'm not sure where you saw a copy of #2 selling for that much money. Here's a typical example on eBay selling for $3 Conan # 2 VG Cond.
What Spider-Man books do you have? There are a LOT of spider-man comics.
By Cassie November 28, 2011 - 10:19 am

10. archie series betty and me -1978 #91

By Rob December 4, 2011 - 6:00 pm
Not much there. If they're in superb condition, they might be worth $1-5 apiece.
By Heidi November 30, 2011 - 2:43 pm
I have a 1966 Daredevil "The Man without Fear" from Marvel comics group that has no number of a series attached to it. I have looked through most of the 1966 series of "The Man without Fear" on-line and can't find this particular issue anywhere. It's also titled "Trapped in the Tar Pits of Death" in the lower left hand side. It shows the Daredevil trapped in tar with two Mammoths behind him. If you could send me any information regarding this issue I would be greatly appreciated.
THX so much!
By Rob December 4, 2011 - 5:59 pm
it has no cover?
By Josie November 30, 2011 - 5:31 pm
I have Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-man comic from 1976 Issue #1 Dec at 30 cents. How much is it worth??
By Rob December 4, 2011 - 5:58 pm
it depends on the condition. That's one of the most collected comic books of all time so it needs to be amongst the best copies (out of hundreds of thousands printed) to be worth anything at all.
By Marie Hoffpauir December 1, 2011 - 2:18 pm
Rob i have about 1000 comic books of all sorts. But I have one here Atari Force Jan 1984 1st Issue-#20 of that series. And all are in very good condition. the price on the book says 75 cents. About how much do you think they would be worth.
By Marie Hoffpauir December 1, 2011 - 2:23 pm
C 547–DC 1ST ISSUE ATARI FORCE BY GERRYCONWAY AND JOSE LUIS GARCIA LOPEZ–JAN. 1984–75CENTS. ROB WHAT DO YOU THINK IT COULD BE WORTH SINCE I THINK I HAVE THE COMPLETE SERIES.
By Rob December 4, 2011 - 5:57 pm
Not really. It's not a popular series.
By Tania December 3, 2011 - 6:37 pm
Hi Rob, i came across a few comic books when i was cleaning out my closet … they are all wonderwoman comics. They no. 267 may, no.277 and 6 (if that means anything) July 87. Do I have anything good!
By Rob December 4, 2011 - 5:57 pm
i think #267 guides for something like $20 in near mint. If yours is incredible shape, you might be able to sell it. the other two aren't worth much.
By Dan December 4, 2011 - 2:34 pm
I have a copy of the amazing world of superman N0. 277 from July 1974. The pages are all flat and its in a protector, but the ink is a bit faded and pages are very yellowed. Would you be able to give me a rough estimate of what it could be worth? Thanks.
By Rob December 4, 2011 - 5:56 pm
.50 or $1.
By larry December 4, 2011 - 5:37 pm
Does a UPC on the front cover mean a second printing? Trying to appraise some Marvel comics, and pricing I've seen doesn't seem to distinguish between a diamond in the upper left (no UPC) and a square (UPC).
By Rob December 4, 2011 - 5:56 pm
Most comic books are first print. With 99.9999999% of all comics printed, there are only first prints. the differences you're seeing are between newsstand comics and comics sold through comic book stores. There's really no difference in value between the two.

By Josh December 12, 2011 - 2:17 am
Hey Rob,
I have nearly 300 comic books that my grandmother bought nearly 20 years ago at a yard sale.
Some are from the 70s but most are from the early 80s to late 80s.
Ive got everything from the fantastic four, to spiderman, superman, batman, hulk, and even some ive never heard of. Id love to get a lit to you, which might take a few days but i could get one to you.
I know most, if not all will be worthless, but you never know if theres a rare jewel inside. Ive even seen a couple of first edition and first volume stuff in there.
There are a few that in really great shape as well.
If i do get the list, i dont want you to waste your time by telling me the prices of all the ones thats 2 or 3 dollars, i would just like to see if you could look threw the list and see if you notice any valuable ones. Im not really interested in selling, but if i do have a valuable one or two, id love to get it sealed up and kept in the best condition possible. Thanks, man.
By Rob December 12, 2011 - 7:43 am
Trust me, I won't be telling you the value of 300 books from the late 80s individually. I will be happy to point out if there are any good books in the bunch.
By Mike West December 13, 2011 - 12:58 am
Rob; Would you be able to give your opinion as to the worthiness of slabbing a book? Are most buyers looking for that, or would they prefer a "raw" comic? Do you have a preference as to which company is better – CGC or PGX? And, not to anticipate your answer, why does PGX fair so poorly in most opinions? Did they do anything specifically to warrant their status, or is it a case of CGC was first, so they're the best and that's that. Thanks.
By Rob December 13, 2011 - 7:44 am
For good material, and that takes some knowledge to recognize, then slabbing books i basically mandatory. And if you're slabbing books, CGC is really the only way to go. PGX has never built the same level of trust- for a variety of reasons. It's like two different leagues.

I have an extensive collection of comic books mostly '60's and 70's and early 80's…approximately 15 boxes, all comics are bagged and in NM condition. We have DC comics May/87 Justice League 1st issue and every issue in between (except for # 71 and # 81) up to issue #92in Sept of 94, then in Oct 94 they issue 0 Beginning of Tomorrow and in Nov 94 continued with #93 and we have them up to issue #113 Aug 96. Is there value in the entire collection to someone?
Thanks
Greg
By Rob December 18, 2011 - 10:35 pm
If you have books from the 1960s and 1970s then those are the books you want to foccus on. You can mostly just pulp books from the mid 80s to the mid 90s.

Thank you for having a great site 🙂 and for helping so many people! I was just curious – My bf's dad has held on to some comics from when he was little. They are in perfect condition (I'm not exaggerating – other than having that *storage* smell I've gently flipped thru the pages and there are no marks, grease spots, or anything. In fact these are just as if they were taken off of the store shelf, and stored away until he just got them for Christmas. No bends in the cover, no folded over corners, everything is intact.) Looking at the prices (like $0.60) on them I giggled!!! I did roam around ebay some but I'm not really good at this kinda stuff then I found you. So if you have a moment, could you just give us an idea – of course we'd never sell them for their sentimental value alone.
The A-Team #2
Captain America #304
Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew! #9, #11
Smurfs #2
The Defenders #116, #133, #134
Thank you for any help you give us. Hope you had a Merry Christmas 🙂 and have a great New Year.

I have a copy of Batman in the Asylum No. 229 Feb. 1971, I wonder what it is worth. It has been protected all these years. Thank you
By Rob January 5, 2012 - 8:16 am
It would depend on the condition. Even books coming off the shelves can be in less than perfect condition, so it really depends on the book itself.
By Sandy January 1, 2012 - 11:56 pm

By Rob January 5, 2012 - 8:16 am
$100 isn't a bad deal if they're in average shape. The only truly collectible book is the X-Men, the rest will find a buyer but it might take a while.
By Chris Taylor January 3, 2012 - 12:35 am
what is the value of a conan the king issue 25 comic book? If you need the volume of the comic, it is volume 1.
By Adam January 5, 2012 - 4:19 am
Hi Rob,
I have spiderman 1-26 from aug 1990-Sep 1992. I also have a #1 signed by Todd Mcfarlane . As far as condition they have been stored flat in plastic sleeves for about 20 years and all seem pretty crisp looking. Could you let me know a value on these.
Thanks
By Rob January 5, 2012 - 8:15 am
Those are amongst the most collected comic books of all time, so not much. Maybe $1 or $2 for the #1 and .50 for each of the rest.
By Adam January 5, 2012 - 12:32 pm
Bummer.
Thanks Rob.
