This auction is for a CGC graded 2.0 G unrestored Batman #1 with Off-white pages. Certification number 0776386003. This comic was published by DC comics in 1940 and features the origin of Batman, the 1st appearance of the Joker, and the 1st appearance of Cat-Woman. (The first Villainess in the history of comics.) Batman 1 is currently the 6th most valuable comic ever published with a top guide value of $215,000.
This particular copy, in addition to being unrestored has tremendous eye appeal for the grade. This is also the first time since last year that a lower grade unrestored copy of this comic has been made publicly available for sale anywhere! As time goes by, collectors are becoming more reluctant to part with unrestored copies of these Golden age key issues and as a result you very rarely see them available for sale on the open market these days. So far in 2009 only 2 unrestored Batman 1s have been offered for sale publicly in any grade. One was a CGC 5.0 that sold for $44,000 (215% of the Overstreet guide value) and the other was a CGC 7.0 that just sold for $98,587 (206% of the Overstreet guide value).
This copy, as a 2.0, has an Overstreet guide value of $9500 but is actually worth considerably more than that. A CGC 3.0 sold last year for $19,120, but prices have risen on this comic sharply since then. Batman 1 went up in value 16% in the latest Overstreet, and has set record prices in every grade with every public sale so far this year. Of course this will not come as a surprise to most, since this comic has gone up in value consistently every year since Overstreet began almost 40 years ago. This comic is being auctioned off with No reserve, so that the market can determine its value. However, I will say that given this particular comic's eye appeal, scarcity, and demand, I would expect bidding will be intense!
