Top 10 Comics of the Decade

The focus here is on American mainstream comics. I have no apologies for that :) These are in no order. They are, however, presented with plenty of love for a decade chock full of good comics.

Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips' Sleeper

Comprising Sleeper: Season One and Sleeper: Season Two, this series went way too far under the radar. It was clearly one of the best superhero efforts of the decade, although at the end of the day it was more cloak and dagger than capes and cowls. Thankfully both Phillips and Brubaker went on to become fancy, big-selling stars for Marvel after finishing up this classic. I just wish a few more people had been able to check out Sleeper when it was running. It was tough talking into a vacuum.

Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips' Criminal

Criminal took the Noir aspects of Sleeper, jettisoned the superhero aspects and distilled a pure drauft of crime drama. I have an affinity for their source material and love these two guys as individual talents so I was basically made to love this book.

What I'm Reading This Week. Batman, Blackest Night, Astro City

astro-city-astra-special-2

I didn't make it out to the shop today, but Saturday when I do go I'm most excited for several DC titles, one Wildstorm book and one Marvel book.

What I'm looking forward to

ASTRO CITY ASTRA SPECIAL #2

I feel like I've been reading Astro City forever. In a good way. Truly one of the great superhero runs. I'll continue to read it until it stops.

BATMAN #692 + DETECTIVE COMICS #858

Detective, especially, has been brilliant of late. Even if it's not I'm a complete sucker for Batman. There are two of the very few titles I will read regardless of the creative team.

BLACKEST NIGHT #4

This is better than I ever imagined it would be. DC's events have been a bit *meh* recently. Not this.

GREEN LANTERN #47

This has been superb since launch and continues to shine at the heart of this event.

ULTIMATE COMICS ARMOR WARS #2

Warren Ellis writing superhero comics in order to buy whiskey. I'm cool with that.

It's Been a While Since I Bought a New Book, Already Graded

I'm tempted to buy a Planetary #27 CGC 9.8 if one becomes available.

I just love the series and the cover of this specific issue.

Anyone got one for me?

Hellboy: Seeds of Destruction.

A comic dedicated to both Jack Kirby and HP Lovecraft. In other words, it was practically made for me.

Show and Tell: Global Frequency #1 RRP

I've been going through my books, looking to reclaim some space in my house and I've found a bunch of books I want to share. The first is this limited Global Frequency #1 given out at the DC RRP Summit a few years ago.

Know About Harvey Kurtzman?

If not, this is a good place to start:

The Harvey Kurtzman Estate

For me, Kurtzman is best remembered as the driving force behind two of the greatest comic series of all time Two Fisted Tales and Frontline Combat. Frontline Combat, especially, ranks as one of my favorite series.

Best Week Ever Meets Paul Pope

I never though I'd see the day.

Actually, I never even considered the day, but such is the nature of comics these days.

Finally, Humanoids Returns to American Shores!

I've made no secret of my intense appreciation for the Humanoids books and I'm really excited that DP have worked out a deal to once again publish them in the United States. I'm especially pleased that Cassaday's brilliant work on I Am Legion will see conclusion in English.

DDP PARTNERS WITH HUMANOIDS FOR LONG-TERM PUBLISHING DEAL
Companies to Bring Unpublished Cassaday, Guice, and Busiek Works to the U.S.

Chicago, IL. (July 27, 2008) – This fall, Devil’s Due Publishing is proud to bring one of the most critically acclaimed lines of comic books back to U.S. comic book stores through a publishing partnership with Humanoids and its European sister company Les Humanoïdes Associés ("LHA"). Previously published in the U.S. both independently and through DC Comics, Humanoids is one of the premier European comic book publishers with a vast library of titles by popular European and American comic creators.

"The quality of the Humanoids library and brand is unmatched, and the partnership between Humanoids and DDP allows us to do something different with the Humanoids brand than has been done before," said Stephen Christy, Manager of Development for DDP. "DDP couldn't be happier to finally give American comic fans the chance to see unpublished work by industry legends like Kurt Busiek, John Cassaday and Butch Guice among others, as well as continuing to bring some of the best European creators to American shores.”

The DDP/Humanoids partnership will be a prestige imprint publishing no more than 2-3 serialized comic books and graphic novels per month. The goal will be to feature titles by prominent American creators alongside titles by top-notch European creators in the standard American comic book format. "We have been very impressed by DDP's growing success, in particular in the audiovisual arena. Considering that Humanoids plans to increase its collaboration with American artists and writers, it was key to establish a strong partnership with a dynamic player in the industry, exactly like DDP" said Fabrice A. Giger, co-owner and Chairman of Humanoids / LHA.

"One of our main goals is to turn some of our properties into film, TV series and video games,” added co-owner and film producer Pierre Spengler (original SUPERMAN trilogy), “There is just such a tremendous potential in a virtually untapped catalog."

The imprint launches in November with I Am Legion #1 (of 6), illustrated by John Cassaday, and the rollout will continue in December with The Zombies Who Ate the World #1 (of 8), illustrated by Guy Davis and written by Jerry Frissen. Additional titles such as Kurt Busiek’s Redhand, and Metal, illustrated by Butch Guice, will follow, as well as the completion of classic titles such as The Metabarons and The Technopriests.
