What is the best Golden Age comic for art and story?

Action #1 has the first Superman story with the usual pedestrian Siegel/Shuster work and a bunch of forgettable filler.

Detective #27 has the first Batman story with the usual plagiarized Bob Kane story and art and a bunch of forgettable filler.

Marvel Comics #1 has the first Human Torch story by hack Carl Burgos, the first Sub-Mariner story (reprinted?) by the under rated Bill Everett, plus a bunch of forgettable filler.

Whiz#2 , Sensation #1, All American #16, Flash #1 etc. same as above.

It wasn't til Superman #1, Batman #1 and (?) that a full comic of quality (?) work appears.

Superman #1 is really just reprints from the first four Action Comics and Siegel/Shuster were not the creme of comic book talent.

Batman #1 is the far better of the two books as it is original and by this time Bob Kane, plagiarist par excellence, was having Batman ghosted by true talents. The artists though were hobbled by having to imitate Bob's style or lack there of.

So what is the pound per pound champ of Golden Age Comics? Captain America #1 with the origin of Cap and Bucky, first apperance of Cap, Bucky and the Red Skull, 4 Cap stories (45 pages) and two filler stories by no less than Simon & Kirby. Hey its 100%Simon & Kirby. Folks, it just doesn't get any better than this.

And, aside from being the best book for art/story from the Golden Age, Cap #1 is probably the most undervalued comic of the Golden Age.

With the possibility of an upcoming quality (think Iron Man) Captain America movie from Marvel, consider the potential of this completely unrestored copy of this great book.

Winning bid: US $38,050.00 Seller: jscomics ( 38167 )

Description:

This auction is for nothing less than the most significant piece of Jack Kirby Original Art to reach the market in at least 20 years. From the pages of Captain America #6, Timely Comics, 1941, this very recently discovered lost Kirby Original is Page 8, the penultimate page from "Meet The Fang – Arch Fiend of the Orient". To call the action on this page spectacular would be understating it. Cap and Bucky are both nearly beheaded. But they recover and turn the tables, in action that can't be contained by the panels, with arms and legs spilling into 2 panels, almost 3. This story was reprinted in the easy to find Fantasy Masterpieces #6. We will include a free copy of that issue as a bonus. In searching through auction archives to find something to compare this to, we came up empty. We didn't find a single Kirby Timely page. The only thing we saw of a similar magnitude was a Bill Everett Sub-Mariner page from Marvel Comics #1, 1939 which sold for over $86,000 5 years ago. All the significant reports we saw of Kirby Originals were from the Silver Age: a splash page from Tales to Astonish #27 sold for $65,000 in 2002. An interior page from X-men #1 went for $54,000 in 2008. Even Fantastic Four pages from the late 60's sold for big prices – a page from FF 63 sold for $23,000, and a page from FF 55 sold for$39,000. We normally list auctions with no Reserve Price, but for this very special item we have set a very reasonable, modest Reserve. This Reserve Price will NOT be revealed, the auction will NOT be ended early, and it will NOT be sold off ebay. If the Reserve Price is not met, it is likely we will relist this page at some future date with No Reserve. But don't wait, get it now.

Just a few words on where this piece came from. In 1941, a young man worked at Lewis Artists' Materials, a store in Manhattan about 3 blocks from the Timely Studios. Part of his job was to make regular deliveries of illustration boards and other Art supplies to the Timely Studios. He did this at least once a week, possibly more often. The people at Timely got to know him and apparently liked him. At some point they asked him if he would like to have 2 pages of Captain America Original art. He gladly accepted, but didn't think it a big deal. 69 years later, his grandson was helping him clean out his home in upstate New York. He had long since forgotten that he had the 2 Kirby pages, and when the grandson found them, he gave them to the grandson as a gift. Neither realized exactly what they were or who the artist was. That brings us to this auction. The back of the other Kirby page that's up for auction now, ending 5 minutes before this page, shows the Lewis Artists' Materials store logo on the back of the illustration board. The back of both boards also shows the Timely Comics, inc. stamp.

We couldn't find a definitive answer on who inked this page. The possibilities are Syd Shores, Al Avison, Al Gabriele, or Kirby himself. We saw reports which said that Kirby's normal procedure was to give the pencilled pages to one of those 3, then apply finishing touches or make corrections himself. Perhaps some of you will know just by looking. Any comments from experts will be appreciated.

Below are a large number of scans and photographs, of various sizes. There are probably more than necessary, but we thought we'd show them all anyway. Take your time. Overall, this page is in excellent condition – only minor blunting at the corners but no creases and no marks to the image area other than those made by Kirby or the Timely production staff. The color is excellent, only very minor soiling near the edges. Check the scans below. The board measures a huge 15" X 20", the image area measures 13 1/2" X 18 1/2".

And the page:

I'm seriously curious where this ends up. Color touch and a trim means it might have been, what- a 9.0 before it was doctored? Interesting to speculate on how much value was pulled out of the book by the work.

I went through the catalog yesterday. I limited myself to picking twelve lots of interest to share with you guys. It was tough because this is an auction full of some interesting material. The Joe Kubert lots themselves could have produced a decent set of 12 items to ogle.

The Incredible Hulk #1 (Marvel, 1962) CGC NM- 9.2

This is clearly the book of the auction. I don't get excited easily by Silver Age marvels, but this book brings a smile to my face. It's tough to find in high grade and it's the HULK.

Hulk smash!

As of this writing it sits at $45,000. Still plenty of room for a thrill bid, I think.

Superman #14 (DC, 1942) CGC VF- 7.5 White pages

Easily one of the top five covers of all time, Superman 14 is a great "slab" book and this copy appears to present extremely well. Hopefully it goes to a good home.

Detective Comics #12 Mile High pedigree (DC, 1938) CGC NM 9.4

A Flessel covered, early Detective from the Edgar Church collection in an almost supernatural state of preservation? You need me to expand on that?

I would love to see the reaction of this book at one of the larger CGC forum dinners. It would be like feeding time at the shark tank. People would line up to get a peek.

Showcase #22 Green Lantern (DC, 1959) CGC VF/NM 9.0

A $30,000 book? $50,000? An 8.0 sold for nearly $20,000 recently, so what does this, one of the three highest graded, sell for?

And what would a 9.2+ do right now? If someone is sitting on a pristine cop of this book, now is the time to bring it to market.

A 9.4 would be a $100k book.

Bernie Wrightson Eerie #62 Cousin Eerie Inside Front Cover

Wrightson's Eerie work is incredible. These days it's not as appreciated as his work for DC, but it's just incredible stuff. This is a prime example.

Joe Kubert Star Spangled War Stories #156 Unknown Soldier Hitler Mask Cover Original Art

A very memorable cover for me. It was tough to pick just one Kubert item to feature, but this one is so striking it won the race.

Bernie Wrightson Frankenstein Published Plate Illustration Original Art

An original Frankenstein plate. Those make me sit up and take notice. Not the greatest plate from the book, but considering the fact that each one if basically a masterpiece, even the "worst" plate in the book is something to cherish. This would be a great Christmas gift for me, just in case you were wondering.

Jack Kirby and Dick Ayers Journey Into Mystery #84 Second Appearance of Thor Splash Page Original Art

An instantly recognizable image for me. I was a big Thor fan for a little while when I was a kid, so I've got about the first 10 issues committed to memory.

Alex Ross Marvels Trade Paperback Painted Cover Original Art

I don't even like Spider-Man all that much and I absolutely love this cover. That's due to Ross and the Marvels association, of course- it's a phenomenal image for the trade cover. Perfect, really.

John Buscema and Dan Adkins Sub-Mariner #8 Sub-Mariner vs. the Thing Cover Original Art

A memorable battle cover. I love the image of the Thing- especially the way his hand obscures the logo.

Dave Cockrum and Terry Austin X-Men #125 Cover Original Art

I forget how good this run was. And then I see a cover like this and I remember back to being a kid and reading this stuff for the first time. Brilliant superhero comics.

Ron Wilson and John Romita Sr. Avengers #125 Cover Original Art

I've always loved this cover. It screams "Bronze Age Marvel" to me- in a good way. I love the menace of Thanos in this image.

I'm also a sucker for the Cosmic Marvel characters in general.

…

So, that's me, what about you guys? What's cool?

To editorialize, I wish original art finished atop the tables more often than it does. Especially Kirby art. He's the King after all.

Sold For:	US $10,300.00	Seller: jofeman ( 4191 )

Description:

Up for auction is an original comic book art page by the legendary Jack Kirby. It is page 8 of the Fantastic Four comic book, issue #37, from 1965. It was inked by Chic Stone, and has been autographed by Stan Lee. Overall the page is in really nice shape for a 44 year old piece, but I will try to describe it as best as I can. This is an 5 panel action page, featuring all four members of the FF in action against the Skrulls. The page measures 21 x 13 1/2, and the art itself measures 18 1/2 x 12 1/2. I don't see any flaws on the artwork itself. Along the top margin, on the left is written "F. Four 37". On the right is written the number 10. I believe that was the number of the page including advertisements. Also on the top margin, is Stan's autograph in ball point pen. It reads: Stan Lee '76. Also in the top margin, on the left, right next to the book title and number, is written in very faint pencil "FF ATTACK SKRULLS". A line has been drawn along the right margin in red pen from top to bottom, with a three inch break in the middle. Inside the break is a small scribble done with pencil. Along the bottom of the page is taped "CONTINUED AFTER NEXT PAGE". The left hand side of the tape doesn't stick anymore, and is pulling up. In very faint pencil along the bottom left is "SKRULLS GET FF". There are a few tiny occasional pieces of tape along the edges of the page. The page is slightly yellowed from age, but surprisingly not too bad for a 44 year old piece. There is a slight scent of cigarette smoke, and there is an extremely faint bend along the middle of the page, but it is practically unnoticable at first glance. Again, as I said, overall, the page is in really great shape, with the only flaws being pretty much the normal wear of age that you would find with any comic art page that's 44 years old. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me, and check out my other auctions!
