Heritage November 2009 Auction- 12 Lots of Note.

I went through the catalog yesterday. I limited myself to picking twelve lots of interest to share with you guys. It was tough because this is an auction full of some interesting material. The Joe Kubert lots themselves could have produced a decent set of 12 items to ogle.

The Incredible Hulk #1 (Marvel, 1962) CGC NM- 9.2

This is clearly the book of the auction. I don't get excited easily by Silver Age marvels, but this book brings a smile to my face. It's tough to find in high grade and it's the HULK.

Hulk smash!

As of this writing it sits at $45,000. Still plenty of room for a thrill bid, I think.

Fantastic Four #37, page 8, original art, Jack Kirby

To editorialize, I wish original art finished atop the tables more often than it does. Especially Kirby art. He's the King after all.

Sold For: US $10,300.00 Seller: jofeman ( 4191 )

Description:

Up for auction is an original comic book art page by the legendary Jack Kirby. It is page 8 of the Fantastic Four comic book, issue #37, from 1965. It was inked by Chic Stone, and has been autographed by Stan Lee. Overall the page is in really nice shape for a 44 year old piece, but I will try to describe it as best as I can. This is an 5 panel action page, featuring all four members of the FF in action against the Skrulls. The page measures 21 x 13 1/2, and the art itself measures 18 1/2 x 12 1/2. I don't see any flaws on the artwork itself. Along the top margin, on the left is written "F. Four 37". On the right is written the number 10. I believe that was the number of the page including advertisements. Also on the top margin, is Stan's autograph in ball point pen. It reads: Stan Lee '76. Also in the top margin, on the left, right next to the book title and number, is written in very faint pencil "FF ATTACK SKRULLS". A line has been drawn along the right margin in red pen from top to bottom, with a three inch break in the middle. Inside the break is a small scribble done with pencil. Along the bottom of the page is taped "CONTINUED AFTER NEXT PAGE". The left hand side of the tape doesn't stick anymore, and is pulling up. In very faint pencil along the bottom left is "SKRULLS GET FF". There are a few tiny occasional pieces of tape along the edges of the page. The page is slightly yellowed from age, but surprisingly not too bad for a 44 year old piece. There is a slight scent of cigarette smoke, and there is an extremely faint bend along the middle of the page, but it is practically unnoticable at first glance. Again, as I said, overall, the page is in really great shape, with the only flaws being pretty much the normal wear of age that you would find with any comic art page that's 44 years old. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me, and check out my other auctions!

CAPTAIN AMERICA #103 Splash Jack Kirby Original Art
Winning bid: US $8,500.00 Seller: wallstmw (437)

CAPTAIN AMERICA #103 Original Splash Page 1 Art.

HISTORIC SILVER-AGE JACK KIRBY splash page 40-years old.

This original Kirby splash art is historic because it is a page 1 splash from the fourth issue of Cap's first solo comic from the Silver Age. This splash is very unique because you are essentially getting two Kirby splashes in one. On the first transparent page, Jack Kirby drew an ominous full page Red Skull pin up. This page also contains the titling at the top "Captain America, Living Legend of World War II" and the typed paragraph at the bottom. This page is stapled (all original material, still attached as it was originally done) to the main page done on normal art board. The main page has lots of writing in the margins, cool stuff. The art is in beautiful condition with only a small tear on the plastic overlay sheet which has a small piece of tape on it, clearly visible in the scan by the "T" in "THE WEAKEST LINK!" On the main page, everything is original art including the titling (such as "SHIELD VS. SKULL!"). Jack Kirby created an eerie effect on the large-size Red Skull pin up on the overlay page by outlining him in white. Very cool. Not only is this an early Kirby Cap splash from his solo title, this page is true history as it is the first date between Steve Rogers and Agent 13 (THE primary relationship in Cap's life and a story that plays a dominant role in the current off-the-charts story line by Brubaker and Epting! In fact, this image of the Red Skull hovering over Cap and Agent 13 as their relationship begins is eerily foretelling of what is to come in the current Brubaker series. Epting also must have been inspired by classic Kirby Red Skull images such as this when he drew several of his covers with the Red Skull in his current series–see covers to issues number 1 and 31 for example).

This original page 1 splash art was published by Marvel comics in 1968.

Early Kirby Captain America splash pages do not come up for sale very often. And when they do come out, early Kirby splashes are normally tucked away into collections permantly. The Kirby Cap splash from three issues earlier (another historic splash without Cap in costume frozen in ice) sold for a reported $20,000 earlier this year. If you are looking to add a very unique piece to your original art collection, this may be the one for you. I am a private collector with 100% feedback so bid with confidence. Please email me with any questions.

Note: There have been several questions regarding the first page. The first page is NOT vellum. The first splash page is a transparent plastic sheet the same size as the second page, which is standard Marvel art board. The first page has the Kirby Red Skull pin up on it (plus some titling at the top and bottom). The second full page splash has Steve (Cap) and Agent 13 (Sharon) on their historic first date together. Both pages are original art drawn by Jack Kirby. The pages were stapled together at production and the combination of the two pages produced the page 1 splash you see in the published comic Captain America #103. VERY unique and very COOL!

Besides the tear by the "T" in the first page noted above, both pages are in excellent condition. There are no cut-outs or paste-ins.

Ten Classic Comic Book Covers

One man's opinion :)

In honor of the new Batman movie, here are ten iconic comic covers for your enjoyment. These are presented in no order and not exclusive :) There are plenty of other iconic images I could have chosen.

Detective Comics #31 / Batman #227

detective comics 31

Batman 227

Starting off with the Dark Knight, here are two covers presented as one entry. The original is brilliant and Neal Adams later homage is even better. To me these are the greatest Batman covers of the Golden and Bronze Ages respectively.

Dark Knight Returns #1

dark knight returns 1

Continuing with Batman, we have this cover by Frank Miller for the first issue of his seminal Batman story.

Personally this cover still fills me with a little bit of awe. I was young when this book hit the stands and the anticipation of it was pretty intense. When I saw it, I felt like it promised something pretty amazing. It turned out to be better than I hoped it would be. The cover, while simple in design, speaks to so much of the classic mini-series heart it's uncanny. A truly brilliant design.

Supeman #14

superman 14
My favorite Golden Age cover. To my mind it's the symbol of what WW2 covers could be. Sure, the Timely covers of the time were fantastic in their lurid detail, but to my mind this simple image beats them all handily.

Incredible Hulk #340

incredible hulk 340

Going more modern for a second…

I'm not even that big of a fan of Todd McFarlane or Wolverine and even I love this cover. It's the ultimate McFarlane image for me and I think the same holds true for a lot of other people. Classic in conception.

Captain America Comics #1

captain america comics 1

Not the greatest Captain America cover artistically, historically this cover can't be beat. Cap burst onto the scene in December 1940 (a full year before Pearl Harbor) and on his first cover he's punching Hitler in the jaw! Classic stuff.

Action Comics #1

action comics 1

C'mon… it doesn't get any more classic than this! 1st Superman. This cover has been copied and referenced so many times it's not even funny.

Speaking of funny, this is the only comic on the list that was used in the Simpsons twice as in a gag.*

Amazing Fantasy #15

amazing fantasy 15

This is another one that really needs no explanation. This is the king of Silver Age books and that fact alone gets people excited for this cover. Add to that the fact that it's a truly iconic image of Spider-Man and the inclusion here is a no-brainer.

And I'm not even that big of a Spider-Man fan.

Weird Science Fantasy #29

the best cover of all time

EC + Frank Frazetta = possibly the greatest comic book cover of all time. I know a lot of people are quick to disagree with that pronouncement and even I, an unabashed fan of both Frazetta and EC, have a hard time with it from time to time. Regardless, the fact remains- this is one cool cover. The power and energy of Frazetta's art is basically unmatched and it's in full display here on this savage cover.

More Fun #54

more fun 54
There were a lot of great More Fun covers. To me, this one is the best. The massive figure of the spectre and his simple, dramatic pose make for an impressive image.

Iron Man #128

demon in a bottle

Probably the most memorable cover of my youth. With the possible exception of Gene Colan's brilliant cover for Iron Man #1, this might be the best Iron Man cover of all time.

* "Homer's Barbershop Quartet" and "Homie the Clown" are the two episodes. To quote Wikipedia:

In the "Homer's Barbershop Quartet" episode of The Simpsons, Homer sees a copy of Action Comics #1, along with the United States Declaration of Independence, an Inverted Jenny postage stamp sheet and a Stradivarius violin at a yard sale all for 5ยข and tosses them aside as "junk".

In the "Homie the Clown" episode of The Simpsons, Krusty the Clown uses a variety of highly valued items to light his cigarettes, including a $100 bill and a copy of Action Comics #1.

Jack Kirby sighting at the Tate

Ignoring the multiple graphic novel references every month in ArtNews*, it's always nice to see soem main stream art love for comics. Here was one such bit of love I saw at the Tate gallery last week.

Jack Kirby fools!

*I remember distinctly being told one front page mention was a fluke (or "it was a slow news week?" I think that was the phrase) a year or so ago by a certain know-it-all. Every month when there's some new comics/graphic novel mention I laugh and think "he sure hit the nail right on the head again."
