High Value eBay Comics Auction For the Week Ending 2011.5.14

CAPTAIN AMERICA #1 (1941) APPT. NM 9.4 (RESTORED)

Sold For: $24,000 Seller: robojo33 ( 3164 )

Description:

A different restored NM Cap #1 than the equally superb gem I listed and sold 4 months ago, here is the large image link for this comic:

http://s497.photobucket.com/albums/rr337/Robotics223/Cap1_060111.jpg

This listing is for an incredible, slightly professionally restored Captain America #1 in apparent NM condition with creamy off-white pages, featuring the first Captain America appearance, published in 1941 by Timely (Golden age Marvel Comics).

It has slight color touch, several minor "invisible" tear seals, and a very tiny piece replaced (1/16th inch), all professionally done, that will not be visible to most hobbyists. This gem does not look or feel restored.

It has not been trimmed.

The comic is glossy, clean, original, and complete.

The colors are superb, brilliant hues, and very rare deep, brilliant cover reds (most have long faded to orange), the paper quality magnificent.

PLEASE NOTE: THIS COMIC IS BEING LISTED AS RESTORED with FULL DISCLOSURE and WILL GRADE RESTORED IF AND WHEN SUBMITTED.

An apparent grade reflects the overall appearance after restoration.

This was obviously a beautiful high grade example prior to the minimally slight pro restoration.

The Book:

Five for Friday (McKean, Lim, McFarlane, Batman #1, Frank Miller)

RON LIM Original Art Drawing SILVER SURFER VS THANOS

I'm a fan of the artist and the characters so there it is. You now know why I featured it first :)

BLACK ORCHID #1 P 32 ORIGINAL ART BY DAVE MCKEAN NO RES

Early McKean. That was a hot book for a few months a long time ago. Just thought you should know…

Batman #1 Spring 1940 Attractive CGC 2.0 Recent Find

Feast your eyes on an unrestored Batman #1. Even with the rusty staple, that's an appealing option for a lot of people.

Todd McFARLANE Detective #576 BATMAN YR 2 Battle Pg NR!

While Year 2 is no Year 1, I do have a soft-spot for the work McFarlane did on this series.

Frank MILLER WOLVERINE Mini-Series #2 Page No Reserve

And the flood of Miller art begins? Might be time to finally take the plunge and buy something from Daredevil.

Five for Friday (Classics #1, Finch art, Jim Lee WildCats, Transformers #1, Spider Jerusalem)

Classic Comics #1 (O) VG- 3.5 Three Musketeers 1941

Not a book I've seen very often on eBay. Not that I've been looking, but it's valuable enough that if it were listed often, I'd see it.

TRANSFORMERS 1 1984 CGC 9.8 1'st OPTIMUS PRIME,MEGATRON

Just throwing out a curve ball. I clearly showcase books from the 1980s, but how often does this list include a book like this? Not very often.

JIM LEE SCOTT WILLIAMS WILDCATS PAGE! NO RESERVE!!!!

For sale by Williams himself.

Original Comic Art Transmetropolitan: Darick Robertson

This is a sick, sick piece. It's just a great example featuring one of the great comic characters of the past 20 years.

New Avengers – All Action – Finch!!

I love Finch's stuff. You should too.

Five for Friday (Jim Lee, Jim Starlin, David Finch, Alex Ross, Mike Turner)

All art this week. As a change of pace, I'm going to just let the images do the talking.

MIKE TURNER FATHOM WIZARD COVER ORIGINAL ART ASPEN

Alex Ross Original MARVELS Large Art Sub-Mariner SPLASH

Five for Friday (Jim Lee X-Men, Showcase #9, Alex Ross Marvels, Dave McKean, Amazing Spider Man 321 9.9)

Alex Ross MARVELS Original Art Galactus & the Avengers

While it's probably not the best page from Marvels, there aren't any BAD pages from Marvels, so this one is definitely a winner.

BLACK ORCHID #1 P 12 ORIGINAL ART BY DAVE MCKEAN NO RES

Again, this is not the best page from this series. But… who cares? It's early Dave McKean comic art.

Amazing Spider-man #321 CGC 9.9 – 1 of 3 best copies

Minty freshness. The fact that there's not a Mint copy of a book like this tells you how hard it actually is to get 10s on older books. This book was bought by the stack back in the day.

Showcase #9 – 1st App LOIS LANE – Looks VG – RARE KEY

I've been known to feature a Showcase #9 here from time to time. Oh, look, here's one now.

x-men 256 wolverine psylocke Jim Lee Scott Williams

And this began a partnership that changed comic art forever. Early work from the pair that, along with McFarlane, set the tone for comic book art for the ensuing 10-20 years.

Five for Friday (mignola, Superman #2, All American #16, Chew #1, Miracleman)

Mike Mignola ORIGINAL ART Hellboy Illustration – RARE!

Mignola just knocks it out of the park every time, doesn't he? Even this little thing is just a joy.

Superman #2 Comic Fall 1939 Edition Detective Comics

It's always fun to watch auctions like this- key golden age books listed by a non-comics seller. Who's boldest?

Miracleman COMPLETE SET 1-24 High Grade 13, 15, 16

This is the absolute best way to get these books. The full lot will scare off people chasing individual issues and you then have the whole thing to sit down and read. Sweet.

All-American Comics #17 CGC 5.5 2nd app Green Lantern

I like the cover of #17. It's bold. Plus… 2nd Green Lantern.

CHEW 1 CGC 9.9 1ST PRINT VHTF TV SERIES COMING NO RESER

You crazy kids and your modern minty fresh comical books…

Five for Friday (Showcase 4, All Star 8, Michael Turner, Will Eisner, Miracleman 15)

All Star Comics 8 CGC 6.0 FN 1st app Wonder Woman 1942

This is an undervalued book. Really, it should be top ten instead of top twenty.

If only she'd been on the cover of this or Sensation #1 were her first appearance, this book would be worth 2-3x what it's worth now. As it stands, it's still cool, but it's in the same ballpark value as Sensation #1 and Wonder Woman #1, which just isn't right for such a significant first appearance.

Commentary over. Filter has another gem on his hands!

Showcase #4 CGC 8.0 VF Universal

An old label Showcase #4. That is all.

WILL EISNER – THE SPIRIT 1949 Page!

Not the flashiest page of all time, but it's definitely got the goods. Solid, atmospheric art by one of the greats.

MICHAEL TURNER WITCHBLADE issue 11 page 5

Some of you guys who never pay attention to anything after John Byrne stopped doing X-Men or Jack Kirby stopped doing Fantastic Four ought to be aware that Michael Turner was phenomenal. Just thought you should know.

MIRACLEMAN #15 CGC 9.8 RARE DEATH ISSUE

I haven't been following this book, but it's still a fun book to share.

Five for Friday (Absolute Planetary, Frank Miller, TOS 49, Daredevil 7, Chris Ware)

Daredevil 7 CGC 9.2 NM- 1st red costume High Grade!

10+ years into the CGC era and this remains a difficult book to find in high grade. It's a real favorite around these parts AND filter is selling it- what's not to love?

ABSOLUTE AUTHORITY, Volume 1: SUPER-RARE!!!

I learned a lesson with this one- BUY ABSOLUTE BOOKS WHEN THEY COME OUT. I'm super happy to have my Planetary set.

Frank Miller Dark Knight Batman drawing NM no resv

A rather nice image, don't you think? Not exactly this, but it'll be a lot cheaper.

TALES OF SUSPENSE #49 CGC NM- 9.2 WHITE1ST X-MEN X-OVER

There's a lot to like about this book. Iron Man + X-Men = oooh, aaaah, oh wow.

Chris Ware Original Art Page from JIMMY CORRIGAN/ACME

I don't seek it out, but I can't remember seeing any Chris Ware art on eBay before. Maybe I just missed it?

Five for Friday (Sensation #1, Showcase #22, Action #252, Captain America #14, Turner Ballistic Cover)

Sensation Comics # 1 – Wonder Woman January DC 1942

Just in time for the Wonder Woman TV show announcement.

Showcase Presents Green Lantern – #22 ~ 1959

A copy reportedly from an original owner collection. Looks like a well-loved collection. I like seeing those almost as much as I like seeing the obsessive condition freaks because I love the idea that people just read these things to death.

Action Comics #252 VF- 7.5 1st Supergirl DC 1959

That's a great book. Not just that copy (which is nice,) but the issue in general.

Captain America #14 CGC 9.2 Timely 1942 OW-W

That's a great cover and a great copy… win-win!

Turner – Ballistic 3 original cover sexy & inked

I remember distinctly, seeing this cover on the stands. It's where I first noticed Turner, even though I didn't actually read his work until Witchblade.

Five for Friday (TMNT #1, All Select 7, Frank Miller, Blood is the Harvest, Batman 31)

This is a weird week. Nothing that really grabs me. That's rare.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1 cgc 9.4 White 1st print

I'll never tire of this book. I remember seeing it on the shelves. I didn't buy it.

All Select Comics #7 WWII Cover Golden Age – Timely

This is a book that screams "Golden Age" to me. There are a lot of different ways a person can approach Golden Age comics and one of the funnest is through the lens of the hyperkinetic Timely war cover.

Frank Miller Daredevil #172 Bullseye Kingpin Page

This is a page that wouldn't work nearly as well as a piecce of history, but might work better as a piece of art if it were produced in the modern era. All those dialog balloons take away from what could be a gorgeous black and white page. But… the dialog balloons have their own interest and the actual dialog is cool. Interesting page.

Blood is the Harvest Rare High Grade 1950’s

Okay, so this one kind of grabs me. Not a book I'd buy, but I've always been fascinated by this one.

Batman #31 VF 8.0 white pages Alfred story DC 1945

That's one cool cover.
