Top 10 Comics of the Decade

The focus here is on American mainstream comics. I have no apologies for that :) These are in no order. They are, however, presented with plenty of love for a decade chock full of good comics.

Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips' Sleeper

Comprising Sleeper: Season One and Sleeper: Season Two, this series went way too far under the radar. It was clearly one of the best superhero efforts of the decade, although at the end of the day it was more cloak and dagger than capes and cowls. Thankfully both Phillips and Brubaker went on to become fancy, big-selling stars for Marvel after finishing up this classic. I just wish a few more people had been able to check out Sleeper when it was running. It was tough talking into a vacuum.

Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips' Criminal

Criminal took the Noir aspects of Sleeper, jettisoned the superhero aspects and distilled a pure drauft of crime drama. I have an affinity for their source material and love these two guys as individual talents so I was basically made to love this book.

Jack Kirby sighting at the Tate

Ignoring the multiple graphic novel references every month in ArtNews*, it's always nice to see soem main stream art love for comics. Here was one such bit of love I saw at the Tate gallery last week.

Jack Kirby fools!

*I remember distinctly being told one front page mention was a fluke (or "it was a slow news week?" I think that was the phrase) a year or so ago by a certain know-it-all. Every month when there's some new comics/graphic novel mention I laugh and think "he sure hit the nail right on the head again."

Castlevania

"The first project planned is an animated movie based on the classic game from the series, Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. Eisner Award winning writer Warren Ellis is writing the script and Eisner Award winning artist James Jean is set to provide art direction."

Comics at the new ICA Boston

I was at the opening of the new Institute of Contemporary Art building in Boston last night. It's a multi-million dollar development for a museum that was, until recently, once housed in a space smaller than the firehouse that was its next door neighbor.

Anyway, Chris Ware had his own little section on the store shelves. Here's a picture:
