What I'm Reading This Week. Batman, Blackest Night, Astro City

astro-city-astra-special-2

I didn't make it out to the shop today, but Saturday when I do go I'm most excited for several DC titles, one Wildstorm book and one Marvel book.

What I'm looking forward to

ASTRO CITY ASTRA SPECIAL #2

I feel like I've been reading Astro City forever. In a good way. Truly one of the great superhero runs. I'll continue to read it until it stops.

BATMAN #692 + DETECTIVE COMICS #858

Detective, especially, has been brilliant of late. Even if it's not I'm a complete sucker for Batman. There are two of the very few titles I will read regardless of the creative team.

BLACKEST NIGHT #4

This is better than I ever imagined it would be. DC's events have been a bit *meh* recently. Not this.

GREEN LANTERN #47

This has been superb since launch and continues to shine at the heart of this event.

ULTIMATE COMICS ARMOR WARS #2

Warren Ellis writing superhero comics in order to buy whiskey. I'm cool with that.

Two Day Boston Show, Starting Today

Fun times.

This is the first show, of any sort, I've been to in a couple of years. Terrible, I know, but that's just the way these things have shaken out.

Many great artists, including a bunch of guys I've known for many, many years. If you're going, make sure to spend a few bucks in artist's alley. It'll make their day.

I hope I'll see any locals there. Grab me and say hi, if you see me.

Fantastic Four #37, page 8, original art, Jack Kirby

To editorialize, I wish original art finished atop the tables more often than it does. Especially Kirby art. He's the King after all.

Sold For: US $10,300.00 Seller: jofeman ( 4191 )

Description:

Up for auction is an original comic book art page by the legendary Jack Kirby. It is page 8 of the Fantastic Four comic book, issue #37, from 1965. It was inked by Chic Stone, and has been autographed by Stan Lee. Overall the page is in really nice shape for a 44 year old piece, but I will try to describe it as best as I can. This is an 5 panel action page, featuring all four members of the FF in action against the Skrulls. The page measures 21 x 13 1/2, and the art itself measures 18 1/2 x 12 1/2. I don't see any flaws on the artwork itself. Along the top margin, on the left is written "F. Four 37". On the right is written the number 10. I believe that was the number of the page including advertisements. Also on the top margin, is Stan's autograph in ball point pen. It reads: Stan Lee '76. Also in the top margin, on the left, right next to the book title and number, is written in very faint pencil "FF ATTACK SKRULLS". A line has been drawn along the right margin in red pen from top to bottom, with a three inch break in the middle. Inside the break is a small scribble done with pencil. Along the bottom of the page is taped "CONTINUED AFTER NEXT PAGE". The left hand side of the tape doesn't stick anymore, and is pulling up. In very faint pencil along the bottom left is "SKRULLS GET FF". There are a few tiny occasional pieces of tape along the edges of the page. The page is slightly yellowed from age, but surprisingly not too bad for a 44 year old piece. There is a slight scent of cigarette smoke, and there is an extremely faint bend along the middle of the page, but it is practically unnoticable at first glance. Again, as I said, overall, the page is in really great shape, with the only flaws being pretty much the normal wear of age that you would find with any comic art page that's 44 years old. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me, and check out my other auctions!

As reported previously…

CAPTAIN AMERICA COMICS #2 CGC 9.2 NM- Classic Hitler c

Winning bid: US $103,099.00 Seller: filter81 ( 491 )

Description:

Up for bidding is perhaps the single nicest comic book I've ever had the pleasure of being able to offer for sale on eBay!!! For sale in this auction is a Captain America Comics 2 CGC 9.2 NM-!!!!!! Captain America 2 was published in 1941 and features a classic Hitler cover.

This comic was just recently discovered as part of an original owner collection in rural Connecticut. The story behind this book is almost as unlikely as the book itself. It began with a late night phone call with the gracious and friendly seller of a small group of 80 original owner comics in Litchfield County, Connecticut. The young man was selling the books for his uncle, who purchased all of them on the newsstand in the same general area. Sitting untouched, unbagged, and unboarded for almost 70 years this freak of nature somehow managed to survive in Newsstand fresh shape for decades!! As most Timely collectors know, Captain America 2 is easily one of the toughest Timelys to find in high grade, and at 9.2 this comic is the nicest copy that has ever been graded by CGC by a wide margin!!!

Overstreet guide value for this comic in 9.2 is $29,000. However, you can pretty much throw guide value out the window for a book like this! This book is simply going to be worth whatever the highest bidder is willing to pay. In this grade, this book is virtually one-of-a-kind and its very possible that a nicer copy will never be offered for sale!!

With this book being so unique, it is tough to find any sales to compare it to. NO CGC graded issues of Captain America below issue #7 have ever sold publicly in a grade of 9.2 or higher. A Superman 2 CGC 9.2 (a book from the same time period with a similar guide value, but with an inferior cover and more availability in high grade) sold for $54,625 in CGC 9.2 in 2006. (And would likely sell for considerably more than that today!)

This comic is without a doubt one of the best investments available in the comic book industry. This book is Impossible to find in grade, and is a highly desirable Timely with a classic cover. High grade Timelys such as this one consistantly increase in the guide at a rate of 10%-15% per year. And with an Avengers movie and a Captain America movie (taking place in the Golden age – WW II era) due out over the next several years, this already in demand book is going to get even hotter in the coming months. If I had purchased this collection by myself and this book was 100% mine to do what I wanted with, there is absolutely no chance I'd even think of putting it up for sale!!

With that said, this book is being listed at a starting bid of 99 cents with NO RESERVE! So someone will be winning this book! Here is a once-in-a-life time opportunity for the average collector to have a chance at a book that would typically never make it to the open market! Time payments are available for this book IF the winning bidder contacts me to set something up PRIOR to the auction ending.

Good luck and have fun bidding.

And the GORGEOUS book

Seriously, where do we go from there? What on earth can eBay do to follow that up?
